O poeta, ensaísta e tradutor José Paulo Paes fez da discrição e do comedimento uma forma de disciplina literária, adotando na poesia o tom baixo e sempre bem-humorado de quem desconfia da exaltação dos visionários e das certezas inabaláveis. A poesia de José Paulo Paes tem a rara capacidade de saciar o leitor em pouquíssimas linhas. Entre os poetas brasileiros do século XX, ele ficou conhecido como o mestre do epigrama - aquele tipo de poema curto e mordaz cuja matéria-prima é uma atenta observação do mundo e do ser humano. Ao descrever um shopping center, por exemplo, ele relembra o "Inferno" de Dante: "Pelos teus círculos/ vagamos sem rumo/ nós almas penadas/ do mundo do consumo". Muitas vezes, a ironia se volta contra o próprio autor, que declara ser o poeta mais importante da sua rua, mas confessa: "Mesmo porque a minha rua/ é curta". Num brevíssimo jogo de palavras, José Paulo resumiu as regras principais da sua poética: "conciso? com siso/ prolixo? pro lixo". Mas a poesia da concisão, para ele, é também a da dúvida - palavra que, aliás, serve de título ao derradeiro poema, escrito na véspera de sua morte. Cético, o poeta não prometeu amar a Deus "sobre todas as coisas", mas "em cada uma delas", como quem opta com firmeza pelo mundo: "hás por certo de preferir um agnóstico fora do teu templo a um vendilhão dentro dele". Por muitas vezes, o poeta se armou com os recursos do sarcasmo e da sátira para denunciar o cinismo dos poderosos e a banalização da vida no mundo contemporâneo. De fato, não existe vício mais oposto à poesia de José Paulo do que a ganância. Até mesmo ao imaginar uma inscrição para o seu túmulo, ele optou pela parcimônia: "para quem pediu sempre tão pouco/ o nada é positivamente um exagero".
