Nascido em 1846 na Ligúria, ainda em tenra idade Edmondo De Amicis mudou-se com os pais para o Piemonte, no norte da Itália. Em 1863, aos dezessete anos, ingressou na Academia Militar de Módena. Combateu na batalha de Custoza, em 1866, durante a Terceira Guerra de Independência da Itália. A derrota para os soldados austríacos ficou na sua memória. Ao deixar a instituição, em 1870, seu talento para o jornalismo já havia sido revelado nas crônicas e artigos que publicava no L'Italia militare, o jornal do exército. Foi quando abraçou o ofício da escrita e começou a se dedicar aos livros de viagem: Spagna (1873), Olanda (1874), Ricordi di Londra (1874), Marocco (1876) e Costantinopoli (1877) assinalam a afirmação do nome de De Amicis na cena literária. Mas o ápice do sucesso veio com Cuore (Coração), publicado em 1886. Trata-se de um livro de formação com ensinamentos de valores morais e cívicos, que refl ete a atmosfera da Itália da época. Coração foi publicado em cerca de 40 idiomas, inclusive português. Considerado o primeiro romance da emigração italiana, Em Alto- Mar, de Edmondo De Amicis (1846-1908), é finalmente lançado no Brasil, onde permaneceu inédito até o presente ano de 2017. Lançado na Itália em 1889, o livro teve dez edições em apenas duas semanas: um verdadeiro best-seller. Em Alto-Mar é o relato da travessia que De Amicis fez do porto italiano de Gênova ao de Montevidéu, em 1884. Toda a narrativa se passa a bordo do navio Galileo, ao longo da viagem de três semanas. Nada menos que 1.600 emigrantes italianos viajavam na terceira classe. A grande maioria tinha como destino a Argentina, e da capital uruguaia seria transportada para Buenos Aires em pequenas embarcações a vapor através do rio da Prata. Havia ainda 70 passageiros distribuídos entre a segunda e a primeira classe – entre os quais o autor. O navio é um microcosmo da sociedade italiana da época, clivada por antagonismos, separada por uma miríade de dialetos e pela escassa difusão da língua nacional. Saltam aos olhos os ressentimentos, a raiva e o rancor dos emigrantes com relação às elites que lideraram a união territorial e política do país que hoje conhecemos como Itália. O processo de unificação, concluído em 1861, marginalizou uma vasta camada da população e abriu uma ferida na sociedade. Esta edição traz ainda dois relatos de Edmondo De Amicis sobre a sua estadia no Rio de Janeiro durante a escala do navio que o transportou de volta à Itália.
