A primeira parte aborda de forma abrangente os diferentes significados do rural contemporâneo, tratando de analisar situações específicas que marcam a compreensão e o conhecimento desses processos em perspectiva histórica. A parte subsequente volta-se sobre a análise de processos e mobilizações sociais que envolvem um número expressivo de novos e velhos atores, bem como as diferentes redes estabelecidas a partir dos mesmos, buscando evidenciar a emergência de conflitos e disputas em diferentes áreas de estudo. O último bloco da coletânea enfatiza o tratamento das políticas públicas em diversos setores e níveis, problematizando desde a concepção e o contexto político que caracterizam o Estado brasileiro até os processos de mediação examinados à luz da capacidade de implementação de um número diferenciado de instrumentos de programas governamentais.

This book comprehensively examines the development of Brazilian agriculture by focusing on the crops which evolved from national products to international commodities on a massive scale. It traces the transformation of Brazil from a country with low-yield levels in 1950 to its current position as a leading world producer. The first section of the book examines the modernization of Brazilian agriculture through a government programme which transformed traditional agriculture through subsidized credit, guaranteed prices, stock purchases, land utilization laws, modern research, new technology and major support for exports.
