Obra-prima da literatura fantástica, O Golem, do austríaco Gustav Meyrink (1868-1932) entusiasmou autores como H. P. O Golem é uma criatura antropomórfica do folclore judaico, feita por mãos humanas a partir do barro. Segundo a lenda que atraiu o interesse de escritores românticos tardios no século XIX, esse personagem gigantesco foi criado em Praga por um rabino para defender a comunidade judaica de ataques antissemitas, mas teria se voltado contra o criador. A presença do Golem de Praga na trama criada por Meyrink é uma entre numerosas referências a tradições místicas e ocultistas, mas tem grande importância simbólica. É uma espécie de força irracional e destruidora que paira sobre as intrincadas vivências do personagem central, Athanasius Pernath, mestre joalheiro cujo passado é obscuro até para ele mesmo. Pernath vive no Bairro Judeu de Praga, onde se passa a maior parte da história. Um dos aspectos mais impressionantes do texto de Meyrink é a descrição desse ambiente lúgubre, de pouca luz natural, onde as construções angulosas parecem se amontoar, povoadas de figuras estranhas que habitam suas vielas, corredores, escadas e passagens ocultas. Entre essas figuras há personagens assombrosos: um sinistro vendedor de ferro-velho, uma esquálida prostituta adolescente, um surdo-mudo que recorta silhuetas em papel, um sábio versado no conhecimento religioso e sua filha encantadora, um marionetista e um jovem estudante com missão de vingança. Pernath se envolve em questões essenciais da vida desses personagens enquanto persegue uma busca da própria identidade por meio de indagações espirituais. Toda a narrativa é atravessada pelo tema do duplo, e os estudos do inconsciente, então em andamento por Sigmund Freud, encontram-se refletidos na fluidez narrativa de O Golem, em que realidade, sonho e alucinação convivem sem limites precisos.
