Kahlil Gibran (1883 –1931) é considerado o terceiro maior poeta em vendas de todos os tempos, atrás somente de Lao Tzu (571 a.C.), filósofo e escritor da Antiga China, conhecido por ser o autor do livro Tao Te Ching e William Shakespeare (1564-1616) poeta, dramaturgo e ator inglês, maior escritor inglês e o mais influente dramaturgo do mundo. Gibran experimentou grande parte de sua notoriedade depois de publicado o livro O Profeta, em 1923. Esta sua produção vendeu dezenas de milhões de cópias e está entre os livros mais traduzidos mundialmente. Gibran tembém foi artista plástico com obras desde sua juventude. De família cristã muito pobre do norte do Libano, não recebeu educação formal. Filho de pai alcoólatra e instável, aos 12 anos com sua mãe Kamila e seus três irmãos foram de navio para os Estados Unidos em 1895 e se estabeleceram no bairro de South End, na cidade de Boston, que já abrigava imigrantes de diversos países. Então pode frequentar a escola, sendo o primeiro membro da família a fazê-lo. Seu primeiro reconhecedor de talento foi o artista e fotógrafo Fred Holland Day também residente em Boston, que se ineressou por seus desenhos e o aprensentou ao mundo literário. Kahlil ainda retornou ao Líbano em 1898 onde frequentou o colégio e estudou Árabe e Francês. Voltou para os EUA em 1902, devido ao falecimento de suas irmãs e então atou relacionamento com Mary Elizabeth Haskell que impulsinou bastante sua produção. Gibran escreveu mais de trinta obras em inglês e árabe, além criar mais de 700 quadros entre desenhos, aquarelas e gravuras, não sendo, todavia, famoso por esta produção, bastante ignorada. Sua morte se deu em 10 de abril de 1931, aos 48 anos.
