A liberdade é um assunto sempre atual. Mas qual liberdade? Como ela se apresenta no laço social? Será que a liberdade do capitalismo nos liberta ou nos oprime mais ainda? São essas questões que buscamos analisar neste livro: o quanto a noção de liberdade é importante para podermos analisar não somente as contradições do neoliberalismo, mas também apontar as possibilidades de alternativas a esse modo de laço social no capitalismo. Nossa análise é orientada pela psicanálise lacaniana, principalmente com base na noção de discurso do capitalista como modalidade contemporânea de discurso do mestre. Nesse sentido, pensamos que uma liberdade em determinado discurso encontra, em si, uma diversidade de contradições que exige do sujeito um consentimento que o leva a concordar em abrir mão de uma série de direitos e condições que a liberdade liberal pretendia oferecer. Assim, a liberdade no liberalismo e no neoliberalismo implica exigir do sujeito um assentimento que não permita que ele possa pensar em outros modos de laço social ou em outros modos de liberdade que não sejam individualistas ou coercitivos para boa parte dos sujeitos. E, com isso, apostar que o discurso psicanalítico precisa estar atento a essas contradições do discurso do capitalista no neoliberalismo em relação à liberdade para poder estabelecer algumas condições a fim de que o sujeito do inconsciente seja um sujeito que não se submeta a uma liberdade necessariamente individualista, e sim sustente um desejo em que a liberdade seja emancipatória para todos, mas cada qual a seu modo.

Neoliberalism - the doctrine that market exchange is an ethic in itself, capable of acting as a guide for all human action - has become dominant in both thought and practice throughout much of the world since 1970 or so. Its spread has depended upon a reconstitution of state powers such that privatization, finance, and market processes are emphasized. State interventions in the economy are minimized, while the obligations of the state to provide for the welfare of its citizens are diminished. David Harvey, author of 'The New Imperialism' and 'The Condition of Postmodernity', here tells the political-economic story of where neoliberalization came from and how it proliferated on the world stage. While Thatcher and Reagan are often cited as primary authors of this neoliberal turn, Harvey shows how a complex of forces, from Chile to China and from New York City to Mexico City, have also played their part. In addition he explores the continuities and contrasts between neoliberalism of the Clinton sort and the recent turn towards neoconservative imperialism of George W. Bush. Taxing the Rich draws on unparalleled evidence from twenty countries over the last two centuries to provide the broadest and most in-depth history of progressive taxation available. Scheve and Stasavage explore the intellectual and political debates surrounding the taxation of the wealthy while also providing the most detailed examination to date of when taxes have been levied against the rich and when they haven't. Fairness in debates about taxing the rich has depended on different views of what it means to treat people as equals and whether taxing the rich advances or undermines this norm. This book provides a fascinating analysis of a single jurisdiction, Brazil, and accounts for both the successes and the failures of its most recent constitutional project, inaugurated by the Constitution of 1988. It sets out the following aspects of the constitutional development and erosion: - the different phases of the promised transition from military rule to a 'social-democratic constitutionalism'; - the obstacles to democratisation derived from the absence of true institutional reforms in the judicial branch and in the civil-military relationship; - the legal and social practices which maintained a structure that obstructed the emergence of an effective social-democracy, such as the neoliberal pattern, the acceptance in the political field of unlawful organisations, such as the milícias, and the way the digital revolution has been harming the formation of democratic sovereignty. Situating Brazil in the global context of the revival of authoritarianism, it details the factors which are common to the third wave of democratisation reflux. Accounting for those aspects, particular to the Brazilian jurisdiction, it shows that there is a tension in the Brazilian constitution. On the one hand, such constitutionalism was renewed by democratic pressure on governments to undertake social politics since 1988.
