Barcarrota, Verão de 1556. Em Barcarrota, o médico cripto-judeu Francisco de Penharanda leva uma vida pacata. Contudo, algumas sombras toldam a sua vida (e a sua fé). Numa época em que as trevas da inquisição se adensam, o médico tem de rezar em clandestinidade, contando com a cumplicidade dos vizinhos e até do pároco local, frei Miguel de Santa Cruz, um bizarro clérigo que garante conversar com o diabo. Mas uma sombra ainda mais espessa o macera. A sua mulher, dona Guiomar, padece de uma doença mental degenerativa que lhe abrevia os momentos de lucidez. Desenganado já da sua inútil medicina, Francisco de Penharanda volta-se para terapias cada vez mais estranhas e interditas. Para tal conta com o auxílio de um antigo discípulo, o português Fernão Brandão, médico em Olivença. É esta importante personagem quem lhe fornece os livros esotéricos (de quiromancia, de astrologia, de exorcismo) com que o velho médico tenta, em desespero, sarar a mulher. Porém, de mês para mês, o ambiente na vila piora. Frei Miguel de Santa Cruz é substituído por Frei Ruiz do Monte Sinai, um frade que oscila entre uma indisfarçável simpatia e um atroz calculismo, sempre enquadrados por uma cultura enciclopédica. No Outono de 1556, a vila muda drasticamente. O cerco aperta-se sobre o médico. Num momento de lucidez, dona Guiomar apercebe-se do risco que o marido corre. A meio da noite abandona a sua casa e suicida-se nas profundezas da ribeira de Alcarrache, perto da vila, onde a família tem um moinho e onde há anos haviam enterrado os objectos rituais da sua fé judaica. A morte de dona Guiomar liberta Francisco de Penharanda.

Quarto di una serie di convegni tenutisi precedentemente presso sedi universitarie brasiliane, portoghesi e francesi, questo volume riunisce i contributi del convegno svoltosi presso l’Università Roma Tre nel dicembre del 2021. Così come negli altri tre convegni, il tema trattato è stato il romanzo storico ottocentesco di lingua portoghese. Il proposito di questa iniziativa, che nell’arco di quattro anni ha mobilitato un numero considerevole di ricercatori, era mettere a fuoco la produzione romanzesca portoghese e brasiliana sottolineando, in primo luogo, come la produzione di romanzi storici in una zona periferica si discosti dal modello proposto in lingua inglese e francese. In secondo luogo, i convegni sono stati motivati dall’esigenza di ripensare un genere letterario un po’ trascurato da un’imponente produzione critico-teorica orientata, piuttosto, intorno alla produzione di romanzi storici post-moderni. Nonostante i grandi meriti di questa produzione, il risultato è stato affrontare lo studio del romanzo storico romantico in modo un po’ convenzionale – e in alcuni casi addirittura superficiale visto che spesso le considerazioni sul romanzo storico romantico erano basate su testi di seconda mano. In particolare, in questo volume, vengono affrontati temi come la rivisitazione di scrittori portoghesi ottocenteschi, la visione della colonizzazione del Brasile in autori portoghesi, il trattamento indiretto di tematiche del presente (dell’autore) attraverso la lettura di conflitti passati nonché autori o opere poco noti ma di grande originalità. Dal punto di vista di un approccio più legato al genere letterario e le sue strutture formali, alcuni lavori esaminano il rapporto tra tragedia e romanzo storico, saga familiare e romanzo storico nonché il patto di lettura proposto dal romanzo storico ottocentesco. Infine, con uno sguardo sulla contemporaneità, il volume viene arricchito da uno studio sulla produzione attuale di romanzi storici in Portogallo. DOI: 10.13134/979-12-5977-356-2

One of the main cultural consequences of the contacts between Islam and the West has been the borrowing of hundreds of words, mostly of Arabic but also of other important languages of the Islamic world, such as Persian, Turkish, Berber, etc. by Western languages. Such loanwords are particularly abundant and relevant in the case of the Iberian Peninsula because of the presence of Islamic states in it for many centuries; their study is very revealing when it comes to assess the impact of those states in the emergence and shaping of Western civilization. Some famous Arabic scholars, above all R. Dozy, have tackled this task in the past, followed by other attempts at increasing and improving his pioneering work; however, the progresses achieved during the last quarter of the 20th c., in such fields as Andalusi and Andalusi Romance dialectology and lexicology made it necessary to update all the available information on this topic and to offer it in English.
