“A luz invisível” é uma coletânea de contos do escritor católico inglês Monsenhor Robert Hugh Benson, mais conhecido do público brasileiro por seu romance de ficção científica “O senhor do mundo”. Mas Benson foi um autor muito prolífico tanto na produção de obras não-ficção, como teologia e apologética, quanto de ficção em geral, como romances históricos, romances e contos ambientados em sua própria época, a virada dos séculos XIX e XX, além de contos de difícil classificação, como é o caso propriamente de “A Luz invisível”, cujas narrativas são às vezes, chamadas de “góticas” ou de “terror”, classificações que lhe fazem justiça somente num certo sentido: a presença do sobrenatural nos contos. Porém, muitas vezes, se essas histórias são sombrias e fantasmagóricas, têm também um caráter inegavelmente teológico e metafísico. O medo que elas podem provocar não deixa nunca de desembocar na virtude da esperança. De resto, os contos do livro são interligados entre si pela presença de dois personagens principais, ambos padres, um, que possui um dom que o faz ver, no nosso mundo, realidades sobrenaturais. Ele é o narrador da maioria dos textos que relata ao seu colega até praticamente os contos finais, que o outro padre relata, mas por circunstâncias que não devem ser mencionadas aqui, sob pena dessa sinopse tornar um spoiler.
