Cerpen-cerpen ini saya olah dari mitos-mitos yang beredar di daerah tempat saya tinggal, Lamaholot, Flores, yang saya anggap sebagai wahana untuk menyampaikan kegelisahan saya yang jauh lebih besar. Mitos-mitos itu saya kawin-kaitkan dengan Alkitab sehingga terkesan punya dasar bahwa segala yang ada di sekitar kita, sesungguhnya, telah tertulis. Saya mengutip teks Alkitab di sana-sini untuk menambal-sulam bagian-bagian tertentu, bukan bermaksud mengultuskan cerpen-cerpen agar terkesan punya wibawa dan mengandung nilai-nilai kesucian dan keluhuran. Sekali lagi, saya ingin katakan bahwa saya menulis karena memang ingin menghasilkan sebuah karya. Maka, saya dengan sadar menyusun semacam benang merah agar cerpen-cerpen ini masih berada pada satu jalur tema. Maka, buku ini bisa juga dibaca sebagai novel. Dan, saya dengan senang hati menerima bila pada akhirnya ada klaim yang mengatakan bahwa ini bukan kumpulan cerpen tetapi lebih merupakan novel. Jika kemudian ada yang mengatakan bahwa saya sedang menggugat entitas superior—entitas Keilahian, saya dengan tegas katakan bahwa ketika menulis cerpen ini iman saya makin kuat. Cerpen-cerpen ini seakan menjadi penghubung yang bersifat vertikal—hubungan dengan entitas superior, dan bersifat horizontal—hubungan dengan sesama. Melalui cerpen-cerpen ini sebetulnya saya sedang mengarahkan pandangan untuk melihat hubungan kausalitas antara imanensi dan trasendensi, antara yang profan dan yang sakral. Sebagai bagian dari upaya saya menerjemahkan sesuatu yang jauh menjadi dekat, bahkan sangat dekat dengan keseharian. Kesemuanya akan bermuara pada satu opini yakni Ia yang diyakini sebagai entitas superior (Tuhan), tercitrakan dalam kehidupan manusia. Jemmy Piran

Wunga Bango berbicara tentang sehari sebelum dirinya mati. Di rumah majikannya ia mengalami penyiksaan demi penyiksaan sampai kemudian sebuah demam yang amat tinggi memungkasi hidupnya. Sejak usia 15 tahun perempuan desa ini sudah putus sekolah dan dijual ke Malaysia. Bango melihat segala hal menjadi lebih jelas setelah kematiannya. Ia menarasikan dirinya yang masih hidup, kondisi kampung halamannya, keluarganya dan orang tuanya yang adalah seorang penjaga sebua (rumah adat) di Larantuka. Ia adalah korban human trafficking yang terus mencari jalan pulang sekalipun tak lagi melekat dengan tubuhnya. Selagi menunggu tubuhnya dikebumikan, ia bertemu dengan leluhurnya yang meminta aba (bapak) untuk memperbaiki rumah adat. Sayangnya, permintaan itu tidak terpenuhi, dan ini seolah menjadi gambaran betapa sukarnya jalan kehidupan dan kematian bagi orang-orang desa sepertinya.

The story of leprosy in the Dutch East Indies from the beginning of the 19th century to the middle of the 20th reveals important themes in the colonial enterprise across the territory that is today’s Indonesia. Operating in a territory with only a few hundred Western-trained doctors and a population in the tens of millions, Dutch colonial officials approached leprosy with uncertainty and anxiety. In the early 19th century, the Dutch administration simply removed sufferers from public view: campaigns targetted anyone “looking ugly”. Towards the end of the century, colonial science considered leprosy a hereditary disease of tropical subjects, and therefore undeserving of the colonial government’s limited resources. The leprosariums were emptied. At the start of the 20th century, a growing understanding that leprosy was spread by a bacillus caused a panic that leprosy might spread from the tropics to the colonial metropole. The mixed emotions of pity, fear and revulsion associated with management of the disease intensified, and fed into broader debates on colonial policy. The experts were unsure, and resources were never forthcoming, and despite a view that “bacteria are the same everywhere”, Dutch leprosy treatment in the East Indies mobilized traditional healing practices and relied on home care. Leo van Bergen’s detailed, attentive study to changing policies for treatment and prevention of leprosy (now often called Hansen’s disease) is fascinating medical history, and provides a useful lens for understanding colonialism in Indonesia.
