Client/server applications are of increasing importance in industry; they are a significant first step towards a global distributed processing model. A very recent response to this trend is the Distributed Computing Environment (DCE) of the Open Software Foundation (OSF), the emerging new industry standard for distributed processing. The papers in this volume discuss the client/server approach based on DCE, illustrating and analyzing the functionality of important DCE components and applications. A number of contributions also focus on new models beyond traditional client/server processing and beyond DCE. The papers in this volume were presented at the International Workshop on the OSF Distributed Computing Environment, held in Karlsruhe, Germany, October 7-8, 1993. Following an introductory chapter, the contributions are grouped into parts on DCE analysis and comparison, application support, methods and tools, RPC extensions, and object-based systems.

Annotation Advanced guide to distributed applications using PowerBuilder 9. This book addresses development Web and Intranet-based systems, including Web Services, Portals, Application-Servers, XML, and Mobile Access. Content provides both specific implementation techniques and architectural patterns for distributed application development. PowerBuilder 9, to be released Q4 2002, introduces many highly-anticipated distributed development features including support for Web Services and Java application servers. Version 9 of PowerBuilder introduces many features designed specifically to blend the traditional strength of PowerBuilder as a rapid Client/Server application development tool with the new emerging models for distributed application development. PowerBuilder developers need PowerBuilder-specific information on interacting with Java application servers, such as WebSphere, WebLogic, and Sybases Enterprise Application Server (EAServer), and Web Service development. This book presents the new capabilities of PowerBuilder 9 along with the architecture and patterns required to create distributed systems in PowerBuilder. William Green and his team of writers are among the most prominent members of the Sybase community, having helped found TeamSybase in 1994. They have written and served on the advisory boards for every major PowerBuilder publication and have authored three books -- PowerBuilder 5 Object-Oriented Design and Development, PowerBuilder Foundation Class (PFC), and Secrets of the PowerBuilder Masters. They respond to several hundred newsgroups and listserv postings daily. They are active consultants implementing PowerBuilder-based solutions and serve on key community advisory panels within Sybase.

Most organizations operate within three distinct computing domains: mainframe-based; UNIX/VMS/MPE servers; and desktops, which are most often personal computers. This book details methods for bringing these domains together into a cohesive, enterprise-wide distributed computing environment. 28 experts in the field of distributed client-server environments address the challenges involved with the integration of personal computers into the enterprise-wide computer environment. The issues of standards, desktop management, and document interchange are discussed, as are the management strategies pertaining to cross-platform systems and PC integration.

Building Application Servers written by Rick Leander and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2000-02-13 with Computers categories.

To address new demands in business computing, software vendors are introducing application server toolkits. The concept is to create clusters of low-cost computers that support one specific business area, then connect these clusters to the corporate network. By using the network as the computer, one piece of software can support desktop computing, electronic commerce, and communication with traditional mainframe software. Building Application Servers is a practical guide to application server technology, explaining the theory of network computing and providing practical techniques that use these tools to produce effective business solutions. Rick Leander includes practical examples and program code that use UML, Java, RMI, and JDBC to illustrate design problems and programming techniques. The development framework offered spans a variety of platforms, vendors, and middleware architectures. Software developers who are familiar with traditional client/server technology but want to learn how to move to distributed client/server computing will find this book invaluable.
