Abstract: "Two developments in the past few years have brought about profound changes to the field of software engineering. The first was the advent of the so-called 'object revolution' that made object-oriented programming (and analysis and design) standard tools in software construction. This shift was motivated by the need to improve upon the generally poor quality of most software products -- the so-called 'software crisis.' The second change was the move from client-server application architectures to more flexible three-tier and n-tier architectures. This change was brought about by a changing business environment -- as enterprises fought to become more competitive, they relied increasingly on IT to gain a competitive advantage, and in doing so, demanded more reliable and scalable software systems. These changes pose two new challenges for software developers. First, how does one efficiently construct n-tier applications that effectively meet the needs of the changing business environment? Secondly, just how far should the notion of object-orientation be extended throughout a software system? In answering the first question, this paper asserts that a persistence framework abstraction is a fundamental prerequisite. This paper then sets forth a number of principles to be used throughout the software development process that serve to reduce the application's dependence on its deployment environment, minimize the time and effort required to construct the software, and ensure that the applications meets [sic] both its functional and non-functional requirements. It is in this way that software can [sic] meeting the changing needs of the business environment. This paper's treatment of the second question takes on the form of an undercurrent that runs throughout. This paper asserts that extending object-orientation into the persistence tier is not necessary, but usually desirable. However, at a minimum, the object paradigm should extend at least throughout the application tier. The frontier of object-orientation in the software architecture should be managed by a persistence framework abstraction."

Object-Oriented Design with Applications has long been the essential reference to object-oriented technology, which, in turn, has evolved to join the mainstream of industrial-strength software development. In this third edition--the first revision in 13 years--readers can learn to apply object-oriented methods using new paradigms such as Java, the Unified Modeling Language (UML) 2.0, and .NET. The authors draw upon their rich and varied experience to offer improved methods for object development and numerous examples that tackle the complex problems faced by software engineers, including systems architecture, data acquisition, cryptoanalysis, control systems, and Web development. They illustrate essential concepts, explain the method, and show successful applications in a variety of fields. You'll also find pragmatic advice on a host of issues, including classification, implementation strategies, and cost-effective project management. New to this new edition are An introduction to the new UML 2.0, from the notation's most fundamental and advanced elements with an emphasis on key changes New domains and contexts A greatly enhanced focus on modeling--as eagerly requested by readers--with five chapters that each delve into one phase of the overall development lifecycle. Fresh approaches to reasoning about complex systems An examination of the conceptual foundation of the widely misunderstood fundamental elements of the object model, such as abstraction, encapsulation, modularity, and hierarchy How to allocate the resources of a team of developers and mange the risks associated with developing complex software systems An appendix on object-oriented programming languages This is the seminal text for anyone who wishes to use object-oriented technology to manage the complexity inherent in many kinds of systems. Scott Ambler, award-winning author of Building Object Applications that Work, Process Patterns, and More Process Patterns, has revised his acclaimed first book, The Object Primer. Long prized in its original edition by both students and professionals as the best introduction to object-oriented technology, this book has all modeling notation rewritten in UML 2.0. All chapters have been revised to take advantage of Agile Modeling (AM), which is presented in the new chapter 2 along with other important modeling techniques. Review questions at the end of each chapter allow readers to test their newly acquired knowledge. In addition, the author takes time to reflect on the lessons learned over the past few years by discussing the proven benefits and drawbacks of the technology. This is the perfect book for any software development professional or student seeking an introduction to the concepts and terminology of object technology.
