Computer vision researchers have been frustrated in their attempts to automatically derive depth information from conventional two-dimensional intensity images. Research on "shape from texture", "shape from shading", and "shape from focus" is still in a laboratory stage and had not seen much use in commercial machine vision systems. A range image or a depth map contains explicit information about the distance from the sensor to the object surfaces within the field of view in the scene. Information about "surface geometry" which is important for, say, three-dimensional object recognition is more easily extracted from "2 1/2 D" range images than from "2D" intensity images. As a result, both active sensors such as laser range finders and passive techniques such as multi-camera stereo vision are being increasingly utilized by vision researchers to solve a variety of problems. Automatie object recognition is a multidisciplinary research area using con cepts and tools from mathematics, computing, optics, psychology, pattern recognition, artificial intelligence and various other disciplines. The purpose of this research is to provide a set of coherent paradigms and algorithms for the purpose of designing systems that will ultimately emulate the functions performed by the Human Visual System (HVS). Hence, such systems should have the ability to recognise objects in two or three dimensions independently of their positions, orientations or scales in the image. The HVS is employed for tens of thousands of recognition events each day, ranging from navigation (through the recognition of landmarks or signs), right through to communication (through the recognition of characters or people themselves). Hence, the motivations behind the construction of recognition systems, which have the ability to function in the real world, is unquestionable and would serve industrial (e.g. quality control), military (e.g. automatie target recognition) and community needs (e.g. aiding the visually impaired). An aspect graph plays an important role in three dimensional object recognition. Its represents the three-dimensional shape of an object by its two dimensional qualitative views as seen from various viewpoints. To create the aspect graph of an object, the viewpoint space is partitioned into regions, each of which corresponds to qualitatively similar projections of the object. Algorithms for creating aspect graphs of polyhedral objects have been developed. We developed an algorithm to compute the aspect graph of a curved object. Our approach partitions the viewpoint space by computing boundary viewpoints from the shape descriptions of the object given in a computer aided design database. These computations are formulated from the understanding of visual events and the locations of corresponding viewpoints. We also studied new visual events for piecewise smooth objects.

This work seeks to demonstrate how invariants can be employed in the recognition of objrcts with articulated components in single range images. Invariants are functions of object feature configurations that remain unchanged under the action of different transformation groups. Each object is constrained to be one of a pre-defined set of models. An individual model is represented by an invariant surface in a high-dimensional canonical frame with the surface being compactly described using wavelets. The framework employed does not require the detection of discrete features from the range image and uses scale-space invariants to achieve some degree of resistance to noise and occlusion.

This paper investigates the recognition performance of a geometric matching approach to the recognition of free-form objects obtained from range images. The heart of this approach is a closest point matching algorithm which, starting from an initial configuration of two rigid objects, iteratively finds their best correspondence. While the effective performance of this algorithm is known to depend largely on the chosen set of initial configurations, this paper investigates the quantitative nature of this dependence. In essence, we experimentally measure the range of successful configurations for a set of test objects and derive quantitative rules for the recognition strategy. These results show the conditions under which the closest point matching algorithm can be successfully applied to free-form 3D object recognition and help to design a reliable and cost-effective recognition system.
