Unlike other vocabulary guides that require the rote memorization of literally thousands of words, this book starts from the premise that using the etymological connections between Spanish and English words--their common derivations from Latin, Greek, and other languages--is the most effective way to acquire and remember vocabulary. This approach is suitable for beginners as well as for advanced students. Teachers of the language will also find much material that can be used to help motivate their students to acquire, and retain, Spanish vocabulary. Spanish Vocabulary is divided into four parts and four annexes: Part I provides background material on the origins of Spanish and begins the process of presenting Spanish vocabulary. Part II presents "classical" Spanish vocabulary--words whose form (in both Spanish and English) is nearly unchanged from Latin and Greek. Part III deals with "popular" Spanish vocabulary, which underwent significant changes in form (and often meaning) during the evolution from Latin to Spanish. A number of linguistic patterns are identified that will help learners recognize and remember new vocabulary. Part IV treats a wide range of themes, including words of Germanic and Arabic origin, numbers, time, food and animals, the family, the body, and politics. ¿Cómo pudo desaparecer de un almacén del Museo Reina Sofía una enorme escultura de Richard Serra de treinta y ocho toneladas? La historia que narra esta novela es del todo inverosímil... y sin embargo sucedió. Finalizada la muestra, el museo decide guardarla, y en 1990, por falta de espacio, la confía a una empresa de almacenaje de arte, que la traslada a su nave en Arganda del Rey. Cuando quince años después el Reina Sofía quiere recuperarla, resulta que la escultura −¡de treinta y ocho toneladas!− se ha volatilizado. Nadie sabe cómo ha desaparecido, ni en qué momento, ni a manos de quién. Para entonces la empresa que la custodiaba ya ni siquiera existe. Cero pistas sobre su paradero. La misteriosa desaparición queda elevada también a categoría de obra maestra. Como el escándalo adquiere resonancia mundial, Serra acepta replicar la pieza y darle rango de original, y el Reina Sofía, sumarla a su exposición permanente. Entre la novela de no ficción y la crónica novelada, entre el disparate y lo alucinógeno, Obra maestra reconstruye a ritmo de thriller trepidante un caso que lleva a hacerse algunas preguntas perturbadoras: ¿cómo es posible que algo así sucediera? ¿Cómo se convierte en original una copia? ¿Qué es arte en el arte contemporáneo? ¿Cuál fue el verdadero destino de la famosa, enorme y pesada escultura de acero convertida en aire? ¿Es posible que un día aparezca?
