Laura Malosetti Costa se ocupa aquí del retrato como soporte de la memoria afectiva y la idealización o deformación caricaturesca de ciertos personajes públicos a lo largo del tiempo, en su doble dimensión de arte y documento. Su análisis está centrado en los retratos más perdurables de algunas figuras heroicas de la independencia latinoamericana. Examina críticamente la ausencia casi total de retratos de Juana Azurduy y la problemática fijación de su imagen; la inadecuación de los retratos de Belgrano al estereotipo masculino del guerrero revolucionario; la imagen "blanda" del traicionado Miranda, y la construcción del tópico del héroe moderno en Simón Bolívar y Artigas. Además, en el cruce entre fotografía y pintura, analiza los retratos de San Martín, Javiera Carrera, Esteban Echeverría y Lucio V. Mansilla, y observa que muchas veces no prevalece la verdad o la estricta semejanza, sino la adecuación a las ideas que se sustentan con cada figura heroica. Finalmente, indaga acerca de la capacidad de algunos retratos para sostener afectivamente comunidades imaginarias —tanto de devoción como de odio—, en dos casos paradigmáticos del siglo xx: Ernesto "Che" Guevara y Eva Perón. Retratos públicos es, en palabras de la autora, "el análisis de aquellos retratos de héroes y próceres latinoamericanos que han impactado en muchas generaciones, procurando comprender cómo se fueron instalando en el imaginario colectivo, cómo fueron concebidos y recibidos, qué hay en ellos de poderoso y persistente para hacerlos triunfar sobre otras imágenes del mismo personaje histórico".
