En 1927 el conde de Polentinos, tras una visita al palacio de la condesa de Alcubierre, dio noticia de la existencia allí de un conjunto de álbumes de dibujos, entre los que se encontraba el conocido como Álbum Alcubierre, compuesto por 24 estampas y 108 dibujos, algunos de los cuales han sido desde el año 1974 objeto del interés de estudiosos como Diego Angulo, Alfonso E. Pérez Sánchez, Jonathan Brown y Benito Navarrete. El hecho de que el Álbum Alcubierre se conserve en la actualidad en la colección Juan Abelló ha permitido a Alfonso E. Pérez Sánchez y Benito Navarrete realizar un análisis exhaustivo de todos los dibujos que lo constituyen, la mayoría de artistas andaluces o afincados en Andalucía -Pedro de Campaña, Luis de Vargas, Mateo Pérez de Alesio, Francisco Pacheco, Angelino de Medoro, Alonso Cano, Antonio del Castillo, Bartolomé Esteban Murillo, Cornelio Schut, Juan de Valdés Leal...-, aunque también se recogen creaciones de artistas activos en Madrid -Eugenio Cajés, Vicente Carducho, Antonio Lanchares, Juan Carreño de Miranda, Francisco Rizi, Antonio Acisclo Palomino y Velasco-, y Aragón -Pietro Morone, Pedro Sánchez de Ezpeleta-, algunos italianos -Francesco Salviati, Giovanni Battista Paggi, Cavaliere d'Arpino, Anton Domenico Gabbiani- e incluso uno portugués -Francisco Vieira de Mattos-. Los frutos de esa investigación se exponen en esta obra, que se abre con un texto de Benito Navarrete en el que sitúa el Álbum en el contexto de su formación en el siglo XVIII, momento en que la nobleza ilustrada empieza a coleccionar los disenos de los artistas como testimonio de su virtuosismo, costumbre imitada por los viajeros ingleses, que se hicieron con grandes lotes de dibujos, hoy conservados en su mayoría en colecciones públicas y privadas del extranjero. El estudio de todos los dibujos y de las filigranas de los papeles empleados en el Álbum Alcubierre, así como el análisis de los documentos conservados en archivos históricos de Sevilla y de las fuentes literarias de la época, le han permitido reconstruir las circunstancias de su confección por parte de don Miguel de Espinosa Maldonado Saavedra Tello de Guzmán, segundo conde del Águila (1715-1784), y su devenir a lo largo del tiempo. A continuación figura la catalogación de los dibujos por parte de Alfonso E. Pérez Sánchez y Benito Navarrete, en la que se sigue una ordenación cronológica que nos permite percibir la evolución del dibujo español desde el siglo XVI hasta el XVIII y la influencia ejercida por los artistas flamencos e italianos, de los cuales hay una importante muestra en el Álbum Alcubierre. Las fichas técnicas van acompañadas de estudios razonados en los que se sitúa cada diseño dentro de la producción artística de su respectivo autor, cuyas circunstancias vitales quedan recogidas en un apartado final reservado a las biografías de todos los artífices de los dibujos del Álbum. La publicación se completa con un apéndice en el que se reproducen todas las páginas del Álbum, de forma que quede constancia de la ordenación que les dio originalmente su propietario, quien mezcló autores y procedencias y reunió en algunas ocasiones varios dibujos en una misma hoja.
