En este primer tomo empieza a adquirir forma la figura de la mujer como narradora oral y como receptora, pasando por el importante papel que juega el lenguaje en la consumación de la Conquista y por Bernal Díaz del Castillo, privilegiado cronista que lo mismo enarbola la pluma que las armas, hasta llegar a la figura central de los estudios de la autora: Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, heredera de la callada tradición de las anónimas monjas escritoras. Glantz demuestra cómo la conquista de la escritura femenina se gesta en el más insospechado rincón del mundo: el claustro. En este fértil recorrido crítico la también novelista ha sabido desentrañar insospechados secretos de la época y sus letras, por ejemplo, del papel decisivo de las mujeres -concretamente las monjas-, que si bien no serían reconocidas como "escritoras", contribuirían a la definitiva comprensión de los aspectos social, cultural, político y religioso de su tiempo.

Each of the book's five chapters evokes a colonial Mexican cultural and intellectual sphere: the library, anatomy and medicine, spirituality, classical learning, and publishing and printing. Using an array of literary texts and historical documents and alongside secondary historical and critical materials, the author Stephanie Kirk demonstrates how Sor Juana used her poetry and other works to inscribe herself within the discourses associated with these cultural institutions and discursive spheres and thus challenge the male exclusivity of their precepts and precincts. Kirk illustrates how Sor Juana subverted the masculine character of erudition, writing herself into an all-male community of scholars. From there, Sor Juana clearly questions the gender politics at play in her exclusion, and undermines what seems to be the inextricable link previously forged between masculinity and institutional knowledge. Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz and the Gender Politics of Knowledge in Colonial Mexico opens up new readings of her texts through the lens of cultural and intellectual history and material culture in order to shed light on the production of knowledge in the seventeenth-century colonial Mexican society of which she was both a product and an anomaly.

Seafaring activity for trade and travel was dominant throughout the Spanish Empire, and in the worldview and imagination of its inhabitants, the specter of shipwreck loomed large. Shipwreck in the Early Modern Hispanic World probes this preoccupation by examining portrayals of nautical disasters in sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Spanish literature and culture. The essays collected here showcase shipwreck’s symbolic deployment to question colonial expansion and transoceanic trade; to critique the Christian enterprise overseas; to signal the collapse of dominant social order; and to relay moral messages and represent socio-political debates. The contributors find examples in poetry, theater, narrative fiction, and other print artifacts, and approach the topic variously through the lens of historical, literary, and cultural studies. Ultimately demonstrating how shipwrecks both shaped and destabilized perceptions of the Spanish Empire worldwide, this analytically rich volume is the first in Hispanic studies to investigate the darker side of mercantile and imperial expansion through maritime disaster.

Este volumen reúne a un buen grupo de expertos en el tema, que abordan el mundo conventual como una esfera cultural con sus propias dinámicas. Unas pertenecen al espacio interno, en sus dimensiones privada o colectiva; otras lo vinculan con su entorno físico y humano inmediato; y algunas lo expanden a tierras lejanas, actuando como agentes de transferencias insospechadas. Las relaciones sociales, las lecturas, las sorprendentes modalidades de la escritura o la compleja revisión de las tradiciones heredadas son motivo de análisis en estos artículos, que se sitúan en la intersección entre los estudios de género, la historia literaria y cultural, y la historia religiosa de la Península Ibérica entre los siglos XVI y XVIII.
