Excerpt from Observations on the Employment, Education, and Habits of the Blind: With a Comparative View of the Benefits of the Asylum and School Systems Connected as I was for eight years with the asylum at Edinburgh, and having thereby had the advantage of observing the plans adopted for the education of the blind, as well as the no less important modes whereby they may be profitably employed, I trust I shall be in some measure enabled to answer the question proposed. It is much to be regretted that Mr. Johnston, whose long and active connexion with the institution qualified him above all others to do so, did not come forward at a much earlier period with a development of the views which regulated the charity for which he has exerted himself so much. Had he done so, he would undoubtedly have occupied a place which, in consequence of his blameable reluctance, has been, in a limited degree, occupied by others; while all the institutions of a like kind in the country would have had before them details in every way beneficial to their funds, as well as to the best interests of those under their care. In lieu of any such, we have only the usual newspaper notices of the annual examinations, which took place from time to time. These excited much, but perhaps too local an interest; and being altogether devoid of those pecuniary details which would have brought its economical and truly efficient management at once before the public, these notices served little else than the purpose of the passing day. Media Technology And Literature In The Nineteenth Century written by Margaret Linley and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-04-29 with Literary Criticism categories.

Operating at the intersection where new technology meets literature, this collection discovers the relationship among image, sound, and touch in the long nineteenth century. The chapters speak to the special mixed-media properties of literature, while exploring the important interconnections of science, technology, and art at the historical moment when media was being theorized, debated, and scrutinized. Each chapter focuses on a specific visual, acoustic, or haptic dimension of media, while also calling attention to the relationships among the three. Famous works such as Wordsworth's "I wandered lonely as a cloud" and Shelley's Frankenstein are discussed alongside a range of lesser-known literary, scientific, and pornographic writings. Topics include the development of a print culture for the visually impaired; the relationship between photography and narrative; the kaleidoscope and modern urban experience; Christmas gift books; poetry, painting and music as remediated forms; the interface among the piano, telegraph, and typewriter; Ernst Heinrich Weber's model of rationalized tactility; and how the shift from visual to auditory telegraphic instruments amplified anxieties about the place of women in nineteenth-century information networks. Full of surprising insights and connections, the collection offers new impetus for stimulating historical conversations and debates about nineteenth-century media, while also contributing fresh perspectives on new media and (re)mediation today.

Victorian Environments written by Grace Moore and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-03-07 with Literary Criticism categories.

This collection will draw attention to new ideas in both Victorian studies and in the emerging area of literature and the environment. Adopting a broad interpretation of the term ‘environment’ the work aims to draw together new approaches to Victorian texts and cultures that conceptualise and are influenced by environments ranging from rural to urban, British to Antipodean, and from the terrestrial to the aquatic. With the pressures of industrialism and the clustering of workers in urban centres, the Victorians were acutely aware that their environment was changing. Torn between nostalgia for a countryside that was in jeopardy and exhilaration at the rapidity with which their surroundings altered, the literature and culture produced by the Victorians reflects a world undergoing radical change. Colonization and assisted emigration schemes expanded the scope of the environment still further, pushing the boundaries of the ‘home’ on an unprecedented scale and introducing strange new worlds. These untamed physical environments enabled new freedoms, but also posed challenges that invited attempts to control, taxonomize and harness the natural world. Victorian Environments draws together leading and emerging international scholars for an examination of how various kinds of environments were constructed, redefined, and transformed, in British and colonial texts and cultures, with particular attention to the relationship between Australia and Britain.

Blindness And Writing written by Heather Tilley and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018 with Literary Criticism categories.

In this innovative and important study, Heather Tilley examines the huge shifts that took place in the experience and conceptualisation of blindness during the nineteenth century, and demonstrates how new writing technologies for blind people had transformative effects on literary culture. Considering the ways in which visually-impaired people used textual means to shape their own identities, the book argues that blindness was also a significant trope through which writers reflected on the act of crafting literary form. Supported by an illuminating range of archival material (including unpublished letters from Wordsworth's circle, early ophthalmologic texts, embossed books, and autobiographies) this is a rich account of blind people's experience, and reveals the close, and often surprising personal engagement that canonical writers had with visual impairment. Drawing on the insights of disability studies and cultural phenomenology, Tilley highlights the importance of attending to embodied experience in the production and consumption of texts.
