Excerpt from Occasional Papers on Mollusks, Vol. 3 During the last 30 years malacology has enjoyed increasing attention. In the Preface to Volume 1 of Occasional Papers it was stated that malacological litera ture in 1954 amounted to some 1000 articles in more than 200 journals and that the phylum contained an estimated species. In the interim, both the estimate Of the total number of living species of mollusks and the annual volume of published literature have changed. In a recent Zoological Record (vol. 107, 1974) which covers the litera ture for the year 1970, articles dealing with mollusks number over 2500, published in several hundred journals by over 1000 authors, representing more than a two-fold increase in twenty years. The species concept in zoology, as currently understood, emerged from the synthesis Of ideas in taxonomy, genetics and paleontology. The New Systematics, which recognizes that species are unique, dynamic, natural units consisting of interbreeding populations with characteristic genetic, physiological and morphological features, has made a reappraisal of the species-level diversity of mollusks necessary. Detailed reference to more recent and critical investigations lends credence to the contention that there are fewer than living species (boss. 1971. Occ. Papers Moll., Harvard Univ., 3: 81 In well studied groups, which have received careful taxonomic revision and monographic review, virtually every species has been named more than once and frequently several times. In highly variable organisms such as pearly-freshwater mus sels, a few species have hundreds Of synonyms. Excerpt from Occasional Papers on Mollusks, Vol. 4: Number 48 to 66 It is with great pleasure that this volume of Occasional Papers on Mollusks is dedicated to Professor Ruth Dixon Turner, Emerita. During over four decades of association with the Department of Mollusks, she has steadily contributed to the field of malacology, frequently made contributions to this series, and steadfastly supported the efforts of staff and students of the Department in their research and scientific endeavors. Professor Turner began her professional career in biology as Assistant Curator of Birds at the New England Museum of Natural History of the Boston Society of Natural History (now the Boston Museum of Science). After completing the degrees of Bachelor of Science and Master of Science, she had a chance meeting with Dr. William J.Clench that led to her becoming interested in mollusks. With his encouragement, she received a Ph.D. from Radcliffe College (Harvard University) in 1954. Unlike Ph.D. candidates in biology today, who are often given their tuition and expenses. Professor Turner had to support herself and do her graduate work while serving as an instructor of biology at Vassar College and as biologist at the William F. Clapp Laboratories in Duxbury, Massachusetts, where she began to study the shipworms or bivalve family Teredinidae and other substrate boring bivalves. In 1946 she became Research Assistant in the Department of Mollusks and has served as Lecturer in Biology, Research Associate, Alexander Agassiz Fellow in Zoology and Oceanography, and since 1976 as Professor of Biology and Curator of Mollusks. Her academic kudos include two honorary Doctor of Science degrees. In 1985, she formally entered retirement status as Professor of Biology, Emerita; but this has not diminished her research activities and she continues to carry on a vigorous program of scientific investigation, contributing significantly to the intellectual and curatorial activities of the Department of Mollusks. Excerpt from Occasional Papers on Mollusks, Vol. 5: Published by the Department of Mollusks, Museum of Comparative Zoology, Harvard University Cambridge, Massachusetts Addison Emery Verrill, first professor of zoology at Yale University, was one of the leading figures in the third era of American conchology, which William H. Dall called the Stimpsonian Period after William Stimpson (1832-1872). "This period can hardly be said to have been introduced by an epoch-making work, but gradually the old methods were discarded for the new. This meant adopting radical changes in classification and welcoming the theory of evolution with all the light it shed in dark places" (Dall, 1888:97). Stimpson was preparing a manual of the marine invertebrates from Maine to Georgia for the Smithsonian Institution based on the most extensive collection of eastern American invertebrates ever brought together, but it, along with the manuscript, was destroyed in the great Chicago fire of October 1871. Stimpson died the following year, only forty years old. It was Verrill who with the aid of his brother-in-law, Sidney Irving Smith, prepared a more geographically limited, but comprehensive manual, Report upon the Invertebrate Animals of Vineyard Sound and adjacent waters (1873). Verrill was to write extensively on the marine invertebrates of eastern North America based on subsequent collections made by the United States Fish Commission. Many of these works were exclusively on mollusks. Some, like those of Dall, were based on the spoils of Alexander Agassiz' expeditions on the government ships Blake and Albatross which Agassiz undertook at his own expense. When Dall wrote his paper, Some American Conchologists (1888), Stimpson, who was thirteen years his senior, was long dead "cut off early in his career showing more promise than accomplishment," but Dall could hardly have called the period after himself or Verrill, who were very much alive, and among its most accomplished members. Verrill was born on his father's farm on Furlong Mountain in Greenwood, Maine on February 9, 1839, and was named for a close friend of his parents, Nathan Addison Emery, who died from a fall shortly thereafter.
