South Seas Encounters examines several key types of encounters between the many-faceted worlds of Oceania, Britain and the United States in the formative nineteenth century. The eleven essays collected in this volume focus not only on the effect of the two powerful, industrialized colonial powers on the cultures of the Pacific, but the effect of those cultures on the Western cultural perceptions of themselves and the wider world, including understanding encounters and exchanges in ways which do not underemphasize the agency and consequences for all participating parties. The essays also provide insights into the causes, unfolding, and consequences for both sides of a series of significant ethnographic, political, cultural, scientific, educational, and social encounters. This volume makes a significant contribution to increasing scholarly interest in Oceania’s place in British and American nineteenth-century cultural experiences. South Seas Encounters investigates these significant interactions and how they changed the ways that Oceanic, British, and American cultures reflected on themselves and their place in the wider world.

This collection of essays examines the many islands that make up the three geographic regions of Oceania -- Polynesia, Micronesia, and Melanesia. These essays discuss and elaborate upon each island's colonial origins, the role they played (or did not play) in World War II, the impact or influence of the United States on these islands, their current political, social and economic situation, and their outlook for the future. These regional essays are intended to aid in the analysis, synthesis, and evaluation of the student's knowledge of Oceania and its inhabitants. Under the direction and guidance of Dr. Michael Manafo, the Grade 10 Pre-IB American History class at St. John's School on Guam, U.S.A. (class of 2012) believes that these island portraits will ultimately further the student in his or her understanding of Pacific history and contemporary regional affairs.

China In Oceania written by Terence Wesley-Smith and has been published by Berghahn Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-03 with Business & Economics categories.

It is important to see China’s activities in the Pacific Islands, not just in terms of a specific set of interests, but in the context of Beijing’s recent efforts to develop a comprehensive and global foreign policy. China’s policy towards Oceania is part of a much larger outreach to the developing world, a major work in progress that involves similar initiatives in Asia, Africa, Latin America, and the Middle East. This groundbreaking study of China’s “soft power” initiatives in these countries offers, for the first time, the diverse perspectives of scholars and diplomats from Oceania, North American, China, and Japan. It explores such issues as regional competition for diplomatic and economic ties between Taiwan and China, the role of overseas Chinese in developing these relationships, and various analyses of the benefits and drawbacks of China’s growing presence in Oceania. In addition, the reader obtains a rare review of the Japanese response to China’s role in Oceania, presented by Japan’s leading scholar of the Pacific region.
