Pp. 1-68, "16 ottobre 1943, " describe the roundup and deportation of more than 1,000 Jews from Rome to the Nazi death camps on 16 October 1943. also recalls the spoliation of the Jewish community of Rome which was forced to pay the Nazis a ransom of 50 kilograms of gold in September 1943 in order to avoid deportation. Pp. 69-96, "Otto ebrei" (first published in Roma: Il Saggiatore, 1961), analyze the case of an Italian policeman, Raffaele Alianello, who was involved in the execution of 335 Italians, among them 78 Jews, at the Ardeatine Caves in Rome on 24 March 1944. He argued at his trial that he erased eight Jewish names from his list, thus saving their lives. States that even if those Jews were saved, the policeman's act was in fact the result of an antisemitic and racist attitude forged by fascist propaganda, i.e. to protect himself from retribution at the end of the war.
