The 1934 miners' strike in Asturias (Spain), also known as the October Revolution, can be interpreted as a general rehearsal for the Spanish Civil War. The progressive radicalization of the unions and the hesitance of the Spanish Socialist Party to embrace their demands displayed the numerous fractures dividing the Spanish left. La madrugada del 5 de octubre de 1934, animados por una convocatoria de huelga general que fracasará en el resto de España, los mineros de Asturias se alzan contra las autoridades y toman el control de ayuntamientos y cuarteles de la Guardia Civil. Desde el gobierno de la República se opta por responder con toda la dureza posible para sofocar la «Comuna asturiana», que tardaría dos semanas en ser derrotada. El balance fue durísimo: casi 1.500 muertos, más de 2.000 heridos y más de 30.000 prisioneros. Manuel Chaves Nogales y Josep Pla –corresponsales de los diarios Ahora y La Veu de Catalunya– fueron dos de los primeros periodistas que pudieron entrar en Asturias una vez restablecido el orden republicano; desde allí contaron los sucesos acaecidos durante las dos semanas anteriores, en las que se llegó a acuñar moneda propia y ciudades como Oviedo quedaron destrozadas. José Díaz Fernández, para quien los hechos eran muy cercanos, publicaría al año siguiente el libro Octubre rojo en Asturias, un reportaje novelado sobre el mismo tema.
