Marcelino Menéndez Pelayo (Santander, 1856 – 1912) fue un escritor, filólogo, crítico literario e historiador de las ideas español.
Consagrado fundamentalmente y con extraordinaria erudición reconstructiva a la historia de las ideas, la interpretación crítica y la historiografía de la Estética, la literatura española e hispanoamericana y a la filología hispánica en general, aunque también fue político, cultivó la poesía, la traducción y la filosofía. Hermano del escritor Enrique Menéndez Pelayo. Fue nominado al Premio Nobel de Literatura.
En 1883, se publicaron las Odas epístolas y tragedias, que contienen poesías de 1879 hasta 1882, donde se destacan sus composiciones amorosas y dos tragedias de Esquilo traducidas directamente del griego por el poeta-erudito. Por último, en 1906, se publica otra edición, que aquí reproducimos, la última revisada por su autor, de sus poesías bajo el mismo título, a la que se le ha añadido una traducción y adaptación de un poema de Judah Leví (Himno de la Creación para la mañana del día del gran ayuno), poeta hebreo-español del siglo XII. El prólogo corre a cargo de su gran amigo Juan Valera.
El quehacer poético de Menéndez Pelayo es una cara ilusión de juventud que se manifiesta por la conjunción de dos fuerzas: la apasionada época de la expresión lírica y su intenso y acendrado amor a los clásicos, a los que deseaba revivir, recrear en su propia y materna lengua.
