After a long period of hesitation and the persuasion of my wife and children, I finally began to write my memoirs. I felt my turbulent life experiences, hardships, and great struggles could be helpful for my children, my friends, my nation, and all future generations. Writing my memoir has a very challenging task since English is not my first language. Moreover, my truthful, straightforward, and candid character will disclose many unresolved conflicts and pain. Therefore, I expect to create new adversaries for me. For me, the tenacity of truth supplants all of the potential animosity I may encounter. I began writing my memoir chronologically long before my birth. I started with the Armenian Genocide of 100 years ago, giving rise to my grandfather's murder by Turks and Kurds. My journey started from my birthplace, Badelbu, a traditional village in northwestern Iran, Urmia, and has ended in the autumn of my life in northern California. For these memoirs, I sincerely appreciate the efforts and input of Mrs. Arsho Melikian, a schoolteacher in Los Angeles; Dr. Minas Kojoyan, the former editor of “Nor Or Weekly; and Mr. Harut Sassounian, a renowned syndicate columnist and publisher of The California Courier. They all helped bring my work to completion. It is hard to find words to express my gratitude to my children, Dr. Masis and Armen, for their sacrifice of time and their incessant contribution to this book. Finally, I am indebted to my wife, Anahit, who supported me unconditionally during the completion of this challenging task.

Utah Series in Middle East Studies In 1915, the Ottoman government, then run by the Young Turks, deported most of its Armenian citizens from their eastern Anatolian lands. According to reliable estimates, close to forty percent of the prewar population perished, many in brutal massacres. Armenians call it the first genocide of the twentieth century. Turks speak of an instance of intercommunal warfare and wartime relocation made necessary by the treasonous conduct of their Armenian minority. The voluminous literature on this tragic episode of World War I is characterized by acrimony and distortion in which both sides have simplified a complex historical reality and have resorted to partisan special pleading. The Armenian Massacres in Ottoman Turkey examines the rich historical evidence without political preconceptions. First published in Germany in 1929, The End and the Beginning is a lively personal memoir of a vanished world and of a rebellious, high-spirited young woman's struggle to achieve independence. Born in 1883 into a distinguished and wealthy aristocratic family of the old Austro-Hungarian Empire, Hermynia Zur Muhlen spent much of her childhood travelling in Europe and North Africa with her diplomat father. After five years on her German husband's estate in czarist Russia she broke with both her family and her husband and set out on a precarious career as a professional writer committed to socialism. Besides translating many leading contemporary authors, notably Upton Sinclair, into German, she herself published an impressive number of politically engaged novels, detective stories, short stories, and children's fairy tales. Because of her outspoken opposition to National Socialism, she had to flee her native Austria in 1938 and seek refuge in England, where she died, virtually penniless, in 1951. This revised and corrected translation of Zur Muhlen's memoir - with extensive notes and an essay on the author by Lionel Gossman - will appeal especially to readers interested in women's history, the Central European aristocratic world that came to an end with the First World War, and the culture and politics of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
