Seminar paper from the year 2014 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 1,0, Free University of Berlin (Englische Philologie), course: Sementics, language: English, abstract: In the English (and any other) language, antonymy belongs to the most interesting aspects which linguists may come across. Human beings think and speak in categories. Thus, they classify every word into groups by referring to one or several (suppositionally) equal characteristics of these words. In this respect, antonymy is simply a particular manner of categorization, but a rather keen one for its being based on the strong (albeit rarely logical ) differentiation from other words. Consequently, an antonym cannot occur on its own terms; it always needs another word to which it refers. Much has been written about antonymy (Lyons 1977, Cruse 1992, Cruse 1995, Murphy 2006 et. al.). Yet, as far as is known, no scientific study has ever been conducted of a phenomenon that is to be called perfect antonymy and is related to the antonymy of entire phrases. This concept means that all single parts of a group of, at least, two words are turned into the opposite, as can bee seen in [1iiid] of the example [Example 1].

Antonymy is the technical name used to describe 'opposites', pairs of words such as rich/poor, love/hate and male/female. Antonyms are a ubiquitous part of everyday language, and this book provides a detailed, comprehensive account of the phenomenon. This book demonstrates how traditional linguistic theory can be revisited, updated and challenged in the corpus age. It will be essential reading for scholars interested in antonymy and corpus linguistics.

Seminar paper from the year 2009 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 2,7, University of Leipzig, language: English, abstract: (1) I ́m on my way to an engagement. (Merriam-Webster 1984: 289) (2) I ́m on my way to an appointment. (Merriam-Webster 1984: 290) In most of the existing languages we can find words, which sound different but have identical meanings. These words are called synonyms. The word synonym comes from Ancient Greek syn meaning ‘with’ and onoma meaning ‘name’. But can two words really have exactly the same meaning? Fromkin et al. does not agree with this definition, he states that no two words ever have exactly the same meaning even if they are synonyms (2003:181). Therefore synonyms are words carrying nearly similar meanings and whose usage is bound to the context. This means that one has to be careful in choosing a word; it might not carry the same meaning as the writer intended. Translation often causes irritation about which of the words fits better in a specific sentence. Especially the non-native speakers have a lot of problems in deciding which of the words is more suitable to use in a certain context and they have to face the question if any one of these words is suitable in any context. But also native speaker are not always sure about the correct use of two synonymous words. Appointment and engagement are two words with a similar sense to the common mind and share many semantic properties. In the thesaurus both words are said to be synonymous and when applying the definition above, we may agree with it. But do appointment and engagement really have exactly the same meaning? In this essay I want to work out the differences and similarities of the words appointment and engagement and if they can be considered synonymous anyway. Therefore I will have a closer look at their definition in different dictionaries and a questionnaire distributed to native speakers will be analyzed. Furthermore, a comparative analysis will be brought out, based on a corpus study of the two nouns. This analysis will be limited to their frequency and their collocates. Throughout the essay both words will be italicized and the complete results can be found in the appendix.

Seminar paper from the year 2017 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 2,0, University of Hannover, language: English, abstract: This Firthian principle will guide the following corpus-based study which investigates how the words to beg, to beseech, to supplicate, to importune, to entreat, and to implore, which are similar in meaning, differ in semantic patterns. Analysing and comparing the words in terms of their linguistic environment will reveal how the specific word is used naturally. Its idiomatic use might be surprising as language is always changing and developing, so one might find out new and unexpected aspects of a words use. Chapter 2 explains the Lexical Priming approach by Michael Hoey and its significance regarding this study. Furthermore, the four categories collocation, colligation, semantic preference and semantic prosody will be defined in order to lay the groundwork for the analysis in chapter 4. In the following 3rd chapter, corpora will be defined as well as the Neo-Firthian tradition of using corpora for lexical analysis and information about the source corpus for this study, Sketch Engine for Language Learning, will be provided. The chapter then concludes explaining the limitations of this study. Chapter 4 will state a few conditions and limitations of the analysis and will then continue to present the qualitative analysis of the target words modelled after Sinclair’s model of extended lexical meaning. The 5th chapter will compare the results of chapter 4 to give an efficient overview of the semantic similarities and differences of the words. Lastly, chapter 6 will provide a concluding statement of whether they differ from each other at all or if they can substitute each other seamlessly. A final outlook will give additional ideas on how to expand this study.

Lexical Priming written by Michael Hoey and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-10-12 with Foreign Language Study categories.

Lexical Priming proposes a radical new theory of the lexicon, which amounts to a completely new theory of language based on how words are used in the real world. Here they are not confined to the definitions given to them in dictionaries but instead interact with other words in common patterns of use. Using concrete statistical evidence from a corpus of newspaper English, but also referring to travel writing and literary text, the author argues that words are 'primed' for use through our experience with them, so that everything we know about a word is a product of our encounters with it. This knowledge explains how speakers of a language succeed in being fluent, creative and natural.

A monumental novel capturing how one man comes to terms with the mutable past. 'A masterpiece... I would urge you to read - and re-read ' Daily Telegraph **Winner of the Man Booker Prize for Fiction** Tony Webster and his clique first met Adrian Finn at school. Sex-hungry and book-hungry, they would navigate the girl-less sixth form together, trading in affectations, in-jokes, rumour and wit. Maybe Adrian was a little more serious than the others, certainly more intelligent, but they all swore to stay friends for life. Now Tony is retired. He's had a career and a single marriage, a calm divorce. He's certainly never tried to hurt anybody. Memory, though, is imperfect. It can always throw up surprises, as a lawyer's letter is about to prove.
