In Greek mythology the Gigantes or giants were, according to the poet Hesiod, the offspring of Uranus and Gaia, who are the spirits of the sky and the earth. They were involved in a conflict with the Olympian gods called the Gigantomachy, when Gaia had them attack Mount Olympus. When Heracles decided helped the Olympians, the war was won.
