The original "whispering gallery" was built centuries ago by Dionysus, the tyrant. It was a cavern 170 feet long, 60 feet high, and 20 to 35 feet wide. It was built so that Dionysus could hear the solitary murmurings of his prisoners, was connected by a secret passage to the tyrant's palace, and was known as the "Ear of Dionysus," because the faintest whisper of a prisoner reached his master's ear. Men will be more careful as to their thoughts and deeds when they learn to remember in every moment of their lives that this great world is a whispering gallery where the smallest thought or deed has wide-spread influence. Richter gave us the idea when he wrote: "Words that a father speaks to his children in the privacy of home, are not heard by the world, but, as in whispering galleries, they are clearly heard at the end, and by posterity." As with a father's words, so with the words and seeds, and even the thoughts of others. Excerpt from book: A STOLEN FLOWER OME time ago a newspaper cablegram told of the depth of grief and tenderness shown by a Paris street urchin. That cablegram follows: Every Sunday for three months past a little boy of twelve has been observed in a cemetery kneeling at a grave marked only by a wooden cross. One Sunday he knelt longer than usual, weeping convulsively. At last he looked about him. Near by was a richly carved tomb with fresh lilacs and other beautiful flowers on it. He gazed at the tomb several minutes, then went to it, took the greater part of the flowers, and was carrying them to the poor little grave, when he met a policeman, who asked what he was doing. The child dropped his burden in fright. On being taken to the police station, he explained in piteous fashion that three months ago he lost his brother whom he dearly loved. On looking at his grave and seeing those around all covered with flowers he thought how cold he must be and had taken the flowers to cover him. A beautiful incident, indeed. Something like it occurred not long ago at Prospect Hill cemetery in the city of Omaha. Teddy and Lee, two little brothers, were wandering one Sabbath day among the graves of that old resting place. None of theirloved ones lay in that city of the dead, but they were, nevertheless, interested visitors to that solemn place. Prospect Hill is filled with flowers on the Sabbath, and there was no exception to the rule on this particular occasion. In their stroll these lads came across one little grave that was conspicuous because of the absence of any marble slab. No blossoms rested upon this little mound. Teddy, the younger brother, a lad of perhaps seven years, hastily looking about him to see that no one was watching, slipped over to a grave that was covered with cost...

Paper Kingdom and Other Stories consists of a novella and three short stories. All are set in Mozambique during the 1950s and 60s, when the country was in the final decades of Portuguese colonialism. Paper Kingdom follows the life of a young Chinese girl, Estrela, from girlhood through to adulthood, her relationship with her siblings and parents, and her growing need to break free from the expectations placed upon her. The novella ends with her reconciled to the new Mozambique emerging from the effects of colonial rule. Paper Kingdom is followed by three stories, each of which, focuses on the attempts of Chinese women and girls to kick against the restrictions of traditional patriarchy and family pressures requiring them to conform. Some of them are stuck in abusive relationships, often stemming from arranged marriages, and seek to find paths to freedom in desperate, and often misguided ways. The contradictions of colonialism, and these characters' interaction with the colonial regime, form a backdrop to the stories: the Chinese in colonial Africa, like other Asian groups, were a buffer between the European ruling minority, and the Black African majority. Their relationship with both colonizer and colonized is hinted at through episodes of racial prejudice and hostility of which they are both victims and perpetrators, thus contradicting the colonial power's rhetoric of racial integration and inclusivity. But the emphasis in all these tales is on the inner lives and memories of these diasporic Chinese families, and the community to which they belonged. Within this community, traditional Chinese beliefs and superstitions are maintained, occasionally adapting to and interacting with local African belief systems, thus providing the poetic underlay of the stories, with elements of magical realism. The collection also shows that this community is riven by family animosities and jealousy, social difference, all of which threaten its coherence as its very future in Mozambique is placed in doubt with the end of Portuguese rule.
