This book examines the development of women in the Hong Kong Police Force (HKP) over the past 68 years, beginning from the early colonial years when calls to include women in law enforcement first emerged, to the recruitment of the first female sub-inspector in 1949, and through to the current situation where policewomen constitute 15% of the total HKP establishment. What accounts for these developments and what do they tell us about organisational culture, gender and colonial policing? This interdisciplinary work is relevant to fields including women’s studies, gender studies, policing studies, criminology, colonial history, sociology, and organisational studies, and will appeal to academics, students and lay readers interested in the development of women in policing.

Offbeat written by David Amram and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-01-08 with Social Science categories.

David Amram has been described as "the Renaissance man of American Music." His musical career has spanned participating with Jack Kerouac in the original jazz-poetry reading in 1957 in Greenwich Village to being honored as the first Composer-in-Residence for the New York Philharmonic and to playing in Farm Aid concerts. He's performed with an incredible variety of musical greats, such as Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonius Monk, Willie Nelson, and and Tito Puente, and he continues to compose and tour nationally. Now available in paperback, following the 50th anniversary of the publication of Kerouac's classic On The Road, Offbeat is the rollicking story of this legendary musician and his adventures with his close friend Jack Kerouac. Amram and Kerouac shared a relationship based on creativity, respect, and fun, and Offbeat offers the reader a full share of each. This wonderful memoir takes the reader from the coffee houses of New York to the San Francisco Opera House and into the making of the now-classic film Pull My Daisy. Offbeat is Amram's energetic and heartfelt account of Kerouac and the creative community of artists-including Allen Ginsberg, Gregory Corso, Langston Hughes, and Neal and Carolyn Cassady-that courageously explored their creative potential and, in doing so, changed American culture forever.

For years there has been consensus about the merits of Britain's 'cult films' -- Peeping Tom, Witchfinder General, The Italian Job -- but what of The Mark, Unearthly Stranger, The Strange Affair and The Squeeze? Revisionist critics wax lyrical over Get Carter and The Wicker Man, but what of Sitting Target, Quest for Love and The Black Panther? OFFBEAT redresses this imbalance by exploring Britain's obscurities, curiosities and forgotten gems -- from the buoyant leap in film production in the late fifties to the dying days of popular domestic cinema in the early eighties. Featuring essays, interviews and in-depth reviews, OFFBEAT provides an exhaustive, enlightening and entertaining guide through a host of neglected cinematic trends and episodes, including: - The last great British B-movies - 'Anti-swinging sixties' films - Sexploitation -- from Yellow Teddy Bears to Emmanuelle in Soho - The British rock 'n roll movie - CIA-funded British cartoons - Asylums in British cinema - The Children's Film Foundation - The demise of the short as supporting feature - Val Guest, Sidney Hayers and the forgotten journeyman of British film - Swashbucklers, crime thrillers and other non-horror Hammers Now updated with more than 150 pages of new reviews and essays, featuring: - The Beatles in Colour! - The History of the AA Certificate - Ken Russell's 1980s Films - Iris Murdoch's A Severed Head - Curating Offbeat films in the Digital Age And much more

Cops everywhere have their stories. The retired police officers of the Oxnard Police Department are no exception. Like the stories told by officers anywhere, Oxnard PD's stories, too, seem to grow each time they are retold until few can offer an iron-clad guarantee that they are today the way the stories actually unfolded then. Some officers, however, offer an iron-clad guarantee that these stories reflect their current memory. Offbeat is a collection of their stories. In another sense, they represent the stories of all police departments everywhere for it is these stories that provide the perspective necessary for sanity in, at times, an insane world. Offbeat is the humor behind the badge.

Offbeat written by Robert Eldridge and has been published by iUniverse this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2002-08-26 with Poetry categories.

Offbeat continues the experimental poetic style of Robert Eldridge. In sharp contrast to his 2001 debut poetry-short story collection, Amber Spirit: Poems & Stories(Hats Off Books), this new collection sets a darker tone. Offbeat goes for the jugular and holds no remorse for its deep, sometimes Gothic themes and smash mouth way of expression. The book is comprised of poetry, skits, and a few off-the-wall interludes. Offbeat appeals to all the misfits, outcasts, and just plain unconventional who ride life off-center with a lot to say. It walks a tightrope between the sentimental, obnoxious, and demented expression.

Making It Up Together written by Leslie A. Tilley and has been published by University of Chicago Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-12-23 with Music categories.

Most studies of musical improvisation focus on individual musicians. But that is not the whole story. From jazz to flamenco, Shona mbira to Javanese gamelan, improvised practices thrive on group creativity, relying on the close interaction of multiple simultaneously improvising performers. In Making It Up Together, Leslie A. Tilley explores the practice of collective musical improvisation cross-culturally, making a case for placing collectivity at the center of improvisation discourse and advocating ethnographically informed music analysis as a powerful tool for investigating improvisational processes. Through two contrasting Balinese case studies—of the reyong gong chime’s melodic norot practice and the interlocking drumming tradition kendang arja—Tilley proposes and tests analytical frameworks for examining collectively improvised performance. At the micro-level, Tilley’s analyses offer insight into the note-by-note decisions of improvising performers; at the macro-level, they illuminate larger musical, discursive, structural, and cultural factors shaping those decisions. This multi-tiered inquiry reveals that unpacking how performers play and imagine as a collective is crucial to understanding improvisation and demonstrates how music analysis can elucidate these complex musical and interactional relationships. Highlighting connections with diverse genres from various music cultures, Tilley’s examinations of collective improvisation also suggest rich potential for cross-genre exploration. The surrounding discussions point to larger theories of communication and interaction, creativity and cognition that will be of interest to a range of readers—from ethnomusicologists and music theorists to cognitive psychologists, jazz studies scholars, and improvising performers. Setting new parameters for the study of improvisation, Making It Up Together opens up fresh possibilities for understanding the creative process, in music and beyond.
