In Paramedics On and Off the Streets, Michael K. Corman embarks on an institutional ethnography of the complex, mundane, intricate, and exhilarating work of paramedics in Calgary, Alberta. Corman's comprehensive research includes more than 200 hours of participant observation ride-alongs with paramedics over a period of eleven months, more than one hundred first hand interviews with paramedics, and thirty-six interviews with other emergency medical personnel including administrators, call-takers and dispatchers, nurses, and doctors. At the heart of this ethnography are questions about the role of paramedics in urban environments, the role of information and communication technologies in contemporary health care governance, and the organization and accountability of pre-hospital medical services. Paramedics On and Off the Streets is the first institutional ethnography to explore the role and increasing importance of paramedics in our healthcare system. It takes readers on a journey into the everyday lives of EMS personnel and provides an in-depth sociological analysis of the work of pre-hospital health care professionals in the twenty-first century.

Research suggests that between 6 and 14 percent of the US population has been homeless at some point in their lives—a huge number of people. No Longer Homeless shares the stories of people who have formerly been homeless to examine how they transition off the streets, find housing, and stay housed. No Longer Homeless offers a unique perspective of people who have managed to change their lives, the resources they needed, and the factors that contributed to lasting change. The book profiles men and women of different races and ages across the country, and it shares stories of people who have been off the streets from two months to twenty years. It addresses topics such as addiction, mental health, income—from formal employment and off-the-books work, and community resources. No Longer Homeless is a powerful look at a group of people we rarely hear about—those who have formerly been on the streets—sharing the details of their lives to help individuals, organizations, and communities learn to better support the ongoing challenges of homelessness.

OFF THE STREETS (OTS) is a 501 ( c) (3) nonprofit charitable organization registered with the IRS and with the states of Connecticut, Pennsylvania, and California—so far. It provides a security deposit (paid directly to the landlord) and basic furniture and living needs to homeless persons who have a means of paying a monthly rent. No government funding is taken. There are no paid staff, no professional fundraisers, no offices, and no utilities to pay. All furniture and other living needs are donated. This book introduces one way that people in Connecticut, Pennsylvania, and California are already helping individuals and families move OFF THE STREETS and into homes of their own. We share our story with the hope that, when you see how easy it is, you will be inspired to start a chapter of OFF THE STREETS in your own community."The narrative of the author's own faith journey has been merged nicely with the stories of those who are homeless. The Gospel theme of caring for the weak, the vulnerable, and the poor resonates throughout. What a powerful and beautiful ministry!" Deacon Peter Jupin, St. John Neumann Catholic Church, Lancaster, PA“The idea behind OFF THE STREETS is such a simple one: that homeless people with a source of income can rapidly escape homelessness and get into a place of their own. We've turned this idea into a reality. We've found out what works and what does not work. We've built a good foundation, and now it's time for others who have received the calling to follow in our footsteps.” Joe Simons, OTS Danbury, CTAn anonymous donor paid for the publishing of this book. All royalties will go directly to security deposits for homeless persons coming OFF THE STREETS."I tried everything, from buying 'how to write' books and audio-to-text converters to just sitting at the computer and typing for hours on end. What I ended up with was three plastic bins full of documents and references, hours and hours of audio files, and a boatload of Word files. I was drowning in my own drivel, clueless as to how to proceed. . . . Then one day . . . I heard about Alice Morrow Rowan of Not Forgotten Publications. . . . I will be forever grateful to Alice for making it happen." Deacon Michael J. Oles, pages 120–121, Help the Homeless OFF THE STREETS One Person at a Time

Not since the 1960s have the activities of resistance among lower- and working-class youth caused such anxiety in the international community. Yet today the dispossessed are responding to the challenges of globalization and its methods of social control. The contributors to this volume examine the struggle for identity and interdependence of these youth, their clashes with law enforcement and criminal codes, their fight for social, political, and cultural capital, and their efforts to achieve recognition and empowerment. Essays adopt the vantage point of those whose struggle for social solidarity, self-respect, and survival in criminalized or marginalized spaces. In doing so, they contextualize and humanize the seemingly senseless actions of these youths, who make visible the class contradictions, social exclusion, and rituals of psychological humiliation that permeate their everyday lives.
