Come along on my 30 year love affair with Haiti! Well, almost thirty years have come and gone since my first visit to Haiti, and I am no longer the young, idealistic woman who took on the challenge of helping to improve the lives of the children of Haiti. In fact, now my children not only have children, they have grandchildren, which make me a great grandmother! Looking back, in many ways it is ironic that my long-term involvement in Haiti came as a result of a little girl simply asking if I could help pay for her to go to school. I am not only very grateful to her, but to all of the children that I have been able to assist. From my "moonlighting" to raise $120 to educate that first student while volunteering for AmeriCares, to facilitating the acquisition and distribution of tens of millions of dollars of medical supplies after the devastating 2010 earthquake, it has been a "hellu'va ride"--One that has truly enriched my life! Throughout my journey, my family has been most understanding, gracious and very supportive in every way. However, the biggest surprise, and my greatest pleasure, has been to have my granddaughter, Tiffany, take over my role and greatly expand the work of Hope for Haiti! Although I shall continue to serve the people of Haiti for as long as I am able, clearly it will require the dedication of members of the next generation, if Hope for Haiti is to continue to prosper. I pray that they will do so. --Back cover

Love Anger Madness written by Marie Vieux-Chauvet and has been published by Modern Library this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-08-04 with Fiction categories.

The only English translation of “a masterpiece” (The Nation)—a stunning trilogy of novellas about the soul-crushing cost of life under a violent Haitian dictatorship, featuring an introduction by Edwidge Danticat Originally published in 1968, Love, Anger, Madness virtually disappeared from circulation until its republication in France in 2005. Set in the barely fictionalized Haiti of “Papa Doc” Duvalier’s repressive rule, Marie Vieux-Chauvet’s writing was so powerful and so incendiary that she was forced to flee to the United States. Yet Love, Anger, Madness endures. Claire, the narrator of Love, is the eldest of three daughters who surrenders her dreams of marriage to run the household after her parents die. Insecure about her dark skin, she fantasizes about her middle sister’s French husband, while he has an affair with the youngest sister, setting in motion a complicated family dynamic that echoes the growing chaos outside their home. In Anger, the police terrorize a middle-class family by threatening to seize their land. The father insinuates that their only hope of salvation lies with an unspeakable act—his daughter Rose must prostitute herself—which leads to all-consuming guilt, shame, and rage. And finally, Madness paints a terrifying portrait of a Haitian village that has been ravaged by militants. René, a young poet, is trapped in his family’s house for days with no food and becomes obsessed with the souls of the dead that surround him.

How quickly relationships can build you up and then, like a swift hurricane, tear you down and apart blinding you with helplessness. A native of Haiti, Dimitry Elias Léger makes his remarkable debut with this story of romance, politics, and religion that traces the fates of three lovers in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, and the challenges they face readjusting to life after an earthquake devastates their city. Reflecting the chaos of disaster and its aftermath, God Loves Haiti switches between time periods and locations, yet always moves closer to solving the driving mystery at its center: Will the artist Natasha Robert reunite with her one true love, the injured Alain Destiné, and live happily ever after? Warm and constantly surprising, told in the incandescent style of José Saramago and Roberto Bolaño, and reminiscent of Gabriel García Márquez’s hauntingly beautiful Love in The Time of Cholera, God Loves Haiti is an homage to a lost time and city, and the people who embody it.

Engage with a love that transcends social experiments and leads to a radically transformed life Even non-Christians are familiar with the Love Chapter of 1 Corinthians, read at weddings, painted on decorative signs, and preached regularly from the pulpit. "Love is patient, love is kind, love is . . ." The words are so familiar they almost lack meaning, a Christianese version of "live, laugh, love." But what happens when these verses are taken seriously? What would it take for someone to live out the Love Chapter as literally is possible? That was the question Kim Sorrelle set out to answer during her yearlong experiment. Using 1 Corinthians 13 as a road map,she focused on one phrase at a time, seeking to understand its true meaning and how it could motivate every daily action. And she didn't just look at the best-known parts of the passage but also the parts we don't think too deeply about: love does not boast, does not dishonor others, doesn't keep a record of wrongs, and more. In her attempts to live the Love Chapter to the letter, Kim journeyed all the way to Haiti, where she met people who both tested and displayed love to its limits. From irritating employees to sexist short-term missionaries to curse-wielding women to the profoundly kind nuns, her encounters are filled with rueful self-reflection and comical commentary, as well as a new understanding of the nuances and power of true love in action. Kim's transformation into someone who truly loves like Jesus will challenge readers to think more deeply about how they can manifest love in their own lives and will reveal the power of Christlike devotion that is unwearied and humble, contented and forgiving. Above all, her exploration is an incredible encounter with the filling, strengthening love of God—a love that truly never fails.

This is a book that unfolds the history of the world’s first black republic through the art of poetry. Yes, the first black republic on Earth started in the Americas! Beautiful Agony is a collection of poetic snapshots of the heroes and heroines who made Haiti possible as a nation and trekked the eternal struggle to keep Haiti’s freedom soul. Do you love poetry? Do you love wordplay? Do you love sophisticated prose? Then Beautiful Agony: Visionaries and Freedom Fighters in Haitian History is for you. These poems serve a double mission: personal pleasure and historical recognition of people and a land and the impressive odds against its existence and the triumphant glow of its survival. When Haiti came into existence, the fight was an extremely difficult one, and Haiti’s enemies were the world’s greatest powers at that time. The improbable but hard-won victory of the slaves against France’s powerful Napoleon and his cohorts was an extraordinary achievement for my little island. This book is for everyone who loves freedom, whether poet lovers, teachers, social workers, ministers, scholars, activists, lawyers, politicians, musicians, psychologists, youth, or parents. It will give you hope that nothing is impossible after witnessing the experience of the improbable hunger and spirit of those who were forced into existence a new nation of former slaves and free blacks. Beautiful Agony is a testament to the creative will and humanity of Haiti’s freedom and agony.

Saving Haiti, Saving the World breaks three rules by looking at politics, religion, and ethnicity as they related to each other at the birth of the Revolutionary era and as they do now. It argues that Haiti and the United States mirror one another. By exploring the connectedness of religion, race, and ethnicity in these not-so-opposite countries, the book tackles the question: is Christianity all the problem-solver a democratic republic needs?

"Laura Wagner has managed to get a huge amount of Haiti into the pages of this book: the sun, the rain, the bottomless spiral of catastrophe, rage, despair and indomitable hope." —Madison Smartt Bell, author of All Souls' Rising: A Novel of Haiti "In Haiti they say 'Kreyòl pale, Kreyòl konprann.' Speak plainly and honestly, and be understood. Laura Wagner does just that in this brave, beautiful book, bringing us the complex life of Magdalie, and a glimpse of a people's soul." —Jonathan M. Katz, author of The Big Truck That Went By: How the World Came to Save Haiti and Left Behind a Disaster "Haiti, already one of the poorest countries in the world, was devastated by the earthquake in 2010. This is a story of everything that comes after: from a candid depiction of the international response to a young girl’s account of what a life of desperation can do to an individual and to a society. Magdalie’s journey shows the importance of connections, of family and friends, during difficult times and the anguish that comes when those bonds are broken. In her debut novel, Laura Rose Wagner has managed to capture the devastation of loss while providing determined hope for the individual and the nation. An important read for anyone who wishes to better understand the reality of life in Haiti after the earthquake." —Ophelia Dahl, executive director of Partners in Health Hold Tight, Don’t Let Go follows the vivid story of two teenage cousins, raised as sisters, who survive the devastating 2010 earthquake in Haiti.
