From the fifteenth century to the beginning of the nineteenth century, devotional music played a fundamental role in the Iberian world. Songs in the vernacular, usually referred to by the generic name of 'villancico', but including forms as varied as madrigals, ensaladas, tonos, cantatas or even oratorios, were regularly performed at many religious feasts in major churches, royal and private chapels, convents and in monasteries. These compositions appear to have progressively fulfilled or supplemented the role occupied by the Latin motet in other countries and, as they were often composed anew for each celebration, the surviving sources vastly outnumber those of Latin compositions; they can be counted in tens of thousands. The close relationship with secular genres, both musical, literary and performative, turned these compositions into a major vehicle for dissemination of vernacular styles throughout the Iberian world. This model of musical production was also cultivated in Portugal and rapidly exported to the Spanish and Portuguese colonies in America and Asia. In many cases, the villancico repertory represents the oldest surviving source of music produced in these regions, thus affording it a primary role in the construction of national identities. The sixteen essays in this volume explore the development of devotional music in the Iberian world in this period, providing the first broad-based survey of this important genre.

Doctor Blood Moon is a love story cum murder mystery cum coming-of-age novel. It centers on a physician striving to reach his full human potential after years in a smothering professional career and a bad marriage. The book is also about the risks and rewards of life in the city of Los Angeles. Johnny Blood, the leading heart surgeon in Southern California, grew up on a dirt-poor Crow Indian reservation in Montana. A basketball scholarship to UCLA was his way out. He attended Harvard Medical School on scholarship and eventually reached the peak of his profession through monk-like dedication. In spite of his success, his failing marriage and the mysterious death of a Nobel laureate patient rattled his self-confidence. As the novel begins, Johnny sets out to reinvent himself as a man, physician, citizen, husband, father, and friend through the agency of people on their own journeys: mainly a beautiful Greek film actress named Michaela and Johnnys nephew, Nicky, an Afghanistan vet whom Johnny rescued twice, first from the Crow reservation and then from the mean streets of Los Angeles.

International Relations Theory And European Security written by Lorenzo Cladi and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-08-20 with Political Science categories.

This book engages with key contemporary European security issues from a variety of different theoretical standpoints, in an attempt to uncover the drivers of foreign policy and defence integration in the EU. Although European foreign policy has been attracting an ever-increasing number of International Relations (IR) scholars since the end of the Cold War, consensus on what drives European foreign policy integration has not yet emerged. This book seeks to encourage debate on this issue by examining a wide range of high-profile security issues which have roused significant interest from policy makers, academics and the public in recent years. The volume discusses, amongst other issues, the strategic posture of the European Union as a security actor, the troubled relationship with Russia, the debate regarding France’s relations with the US following France’s rapprochement with NATO and the EU’s influence in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The collective intent of the contributors to highlight the drivers of EU foreign policy and defence integration ties together the wide variety of topics covered in this volume, forming it into a comprehensive overview of this issue. By paying considerable attention not just to the internal drivers of EU cooperation, but also to the critical role played by the US as an incentive or obstacle to European security, this book presents a unique contribution to this field of debate. This book will be of much interest to students of European security, IR theory, Transatlantic Relations, European politics and EU foreign policy.

A murder in Tucson on the 4th of July leads to a deadly Arizona crime ring in this “expert police procedural with plenty of quirks and twists” (Kirkus). Tucson Homicide detective Sarah Burke is just getting used to living with her boyfriend, her fragile mother, and her hard-charging niece Denny, when a baffling murder case consumes their entire household. A man seen fighting in his home during a Fourth of July parade is later found murdered. There’s surprisingly little evidence in the house to identify who he was—apart from a gun and large sums of cash. Burke and her team of detectives begin to suspect that the victim had been involved in a money laundering scheme. But was the murder a matter of black market business, or something tragically personal? As an ICE investigator follows the money to an international drug cartel, Burke uncovers a trail that lead unsettlingly close to home
