From acclaimed writer and scholar Philip Freeman, a contemporary retelling of classic Greek and Roman mythology. The Greek and Roman myths have never died out; in fact they are as relevant today as ever in their sharp observations about human nature. For thousands of years they have inspired plays, operas, and paintings; today they live on in movies and video games. Oh My Gods is a contemporary retelling of some of the most popular myths by Philip Freeman, a noted classicist. These tales of errant gods, fantastic creatures, and human heroes are brought to life in fresh and modern versions. Powerful Zeus; his perpetually aggrieved wife, Hera; talented Apollo; beautiful Aphrodite; fierce Athena; the dauntless heroes Theseus and Hercules; and the doomed lovers Orpheus and Eurydice still inspire awe, give us courage, and break our hearts. From the astonishing tales of the Argonauts to the immortal narrative of the Battle of Troy, these ancient tales have inspired writers from Shakespeare to J. K. Rowling. In Philip Freeman’s vibrant retelling they will doubtless inspire a new generation of readers.

It would always be summer on the island... A love story with a twist, Tracey Garvis Graves' On The Island is a US word-of-mouth success story to rival Fifty Shades of Grey, with 1500 5* reader reviews online (and counting!) and sales taking it top 10 in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal and Amazon.com bestseller lists. Film rights have been optioned by MGM, with Temple Hill Productions (responsible for Twilight) slated to produce. When thirty-year-old English teacher Anna Emerson is offered a summer job tutoring T.J. Callahan at his family's holiday home in the Maldives, she accepts without hesitation: a tropical island beats the library any day. T.J. has no desire to leave town, not that anyone asked him. He's almost seventeen and if having had cancer wasn't bad enough, he now has to spend his first summer in remission with his family instead of his friends. Anna and T.J. are en route to join T.J.'s family in the Maldives when the pilot of their seaplane suffers a fatal heart attack and crash-lands in the Indian Ocean. Marooned on an uninhabited island, Anna and T.J. work together to obtain water, food, fire and shelter but, as the days turn to weeks then months and finally years, Anna begins to wonder if the biggest challenge of all might be living with a boy who is gradually becoming a man... As romantic as One Day or The Time Traveler's Wife, US readers have fallen in love with Tracey Garvis-Graves' On the Island: 'If you're looking for something to fill the gap after reading Fifty Shades...here it is!' ***** Danielle 'I couldn't put this down. I rooted for this couple from the beginning' ***** Kelkeligan 'A bit Castaway, Survivor and Lost all rolled together, the minute I opened the book, I read till it was finished' ***** Michele 'I loved, loved, loved this. It was a perfect way to spend a cold Friday night stuck at home' ***** Kelly Tracey Garvis-Graves lives in a suburb of Des Moines, Iowa, with her husband and two children and blogs at www.traceygarvisgraves.com.

On the windswept Scandinavian Åland Islands, the festive season is snowy and chilly—yet breathtakingly beautiful. It's time for Alicia to enjoy her first Christmas back on her beloved Islands with her family. There’ll be traditional dancing around the tree and sipping mulled wine in front of a cozy fire. But peace is broken by Alicia’s estranged husband, Liam, who springs an unwelcome and devastating surprise, while her ex-lover, Patrick, tempts her with an altogether different kind of future. Alicia faces impossible choices to keep her family together. With her world crashing around her, can Alicia create the idyllic Island Christmas she’s always dreamt about? Meanwhile, Brit, Alicia’s best friend, returns to the Islands to lick her wounds after a particularly bloody break-up with an Italian chef. When she meets her new boss, the Captain of a Baltic cruise liner, sparks fly. Brit can’t help but fall quickly in love with Jukka, but when she discovers his murky past, she fears her heart is about to be broken yet again. Are the rumors about Jukka true, or just typical small island gossip? Join this quirky Scandinavian island community for a Christmas you’ll never forget! An Island Christmas is a sequel to Helena's first novel set on Åland, The Island Affair, but it can also be read as a standalone book.

Songs From The Second Float written by Richard Moyle and has been published by University of Hawaii Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-07-31 with Social Science categories.

This book, based on fieldwork spanning a decade, gives a comprehensive analysis of the musical life of a unique Polynesian community whose geographical isolation, together with a local ban on missionaries and churches, combine to allow its 600 members to maintain a level of traditional cultural practices unique to the region. Takü is arguably the only location where traditional Polynesian religion continues to be practiced. This book explores the many ways in which spirit activities impact on both domestic and ritual life, how group singing and dancing give audible and visible expression to a variety of religious beliefs, and how spirit mediums relay songs and dances from the recent dead. Takü’s community is well able to articulate the significance of their own strong performance tradition, and this book allows expert singers and dancers to speak passionately for themselves on subjects they understand intimately. Musical ethnographies from the Pacific are rare. Like Moyle’s earlier landmark volumes on Samoan and Tongan music, and also his trilogy on Australian Aboriginal music, this work will be of immense value to Pacific studies and will assume a place among the recognized staples of ethnomusicological research.
