Dans un fort, perdu au bout du monde, au bord d'un rivage abandonné, aux confins d'une immense solitude, le capitaine Kowalsky, le lieutenant Gregor Karel, le lieutenant Simon Renaud, Michaël un soldat, et les hommes, mènent l'existence inerte de ceux qui sont chargés de défendre un territoire. Mais l'on sait vite qu'il n'y a pas d'ennemi, que le fort - qui tombe en ruine - ne sert plus à rien. La veille et l'ennui, et le lent envahissement du désespoir, ont peu à peu raison de ces hommes, en les dotant d'une seconde nature, à laquelle ils se résignent plus ou moins. Kowalsky a pour maîtresse Maria : il l'a installée aux environs du fort. Elle s'ennuie, elle aussi. Elle attend. Elle trompe le capitaine avec ses hommes, s'éprend de Michaël qui, de son côté, voit dans cet amour partagé une issue possible. Au long des jours, frappés de stupeur, chacun laisse errer son imagination : souvenirs, obsessions d'un présent qui s'éternise, révolte, fureur, silence, projets fous de désertion. Ainsi saura-t-on comment le destin les a réunis là, mais non pourquoi. Par ailleurs, le village de Dragon et son bourgmestre ont pris en haine le fort et ses occupants. Au cours d'une patrouille, un soldat tué provoque une révolution. Les villageois en masse assiègent le fort, sous la conduite de leur bourgmestre. Maria et Michaël, qui avaient décidé de fuir sont poursuivis et, enfin, acculés au bord de la mer, choisiront de s'y noyer. Quant au capitaine Kowalsky, il partira seul en barque : c'est une autre forme de mort, la seule, qui soit à la mesure d'un certain enfer vivant, qu'avec un lyrisme soutenu l'auteur a su construire. « La chronique de Fort-Dragon » est le premier roman d'Emmanuel Egmont.
