"The collapse of the Habsburg monarchy in 1918 galvanized discussion about national identity in the new Republic of Austria. As Robert Pyrah shows in this thoroughly documented study, the complex identity politics of interwar Austria were played out in the theatres of Vienna, which enjoyed a cultural prominence rarely matched in other countries. By 1934, productions across the city were being co-opted to serve the newly patriotic cause of the Dollfuss and Schuschnigg regimes, and the Burgtheater, once known as the first German stage, had been transformed into a national theatre for Austria. Using case studies of key productions and a wealth of previously unseen archival material, Pyrah sheds new light on artistic and ideological developments throughout the period, including the neglected earlier years. He documents previously unexplored overlaps in the cultural programmes of Left and Right, and unearths evidence that key institutions were subverted by the Right well before the suspension of parliamentary rule in 1933."

The collapse of Austria-Hungary in 1918 left all Austrians in a state of political, social, and economic turmoil, but Jews in particular found their lives shaken to the core. Although Jews' former comfort zone suddenly disappeared, the dissolution of the Dual Monarchy also created plenty of room for innovation and change in the realm of culture. Jews eagerly took up the challenge to fill this void, and they became heavily invested in culture as a way to shape their new, but also vexed, self-understandings. By isolating the years between the World Wars and examining formative events in both Vienna and the provinces, Becoming Austrians: Jews and Culture between the World Wars demonstrates that an intensified marking of people, places, and events as "Jewish" accompanied the crises occurring in the wake of Austria-Hungary's collapse, with profound effects on Austria's cultural legacy. In some cases, the consequences of this marking resulted in grave injustices. Philipp Halsmann, for example, was wrongfully imprisoned for the murder of his father years before he became a world-famous photographer. And the men who shot and killed writer Hugo Bettauer and philosopher Moritz Schlick received inadequate punishment for their murderous deeds. But engagements with the terms of Jewish difference also characterized the creation of culture, as shown in Hugo Bettauer's satirical novel The City without Jews and its film adaptation, other texts by Veza Canetti, David Vogel, A.M. Fuchs, Vicki Baum, and Mela Hartwig, and performances at the Salzburg Festival and the Yiddish theater in Vienna. By examining the lives, works, and deeds of a broad range of Austrians, Lisa Silverman reveals how the social codings of politics, gender, and nation received a powerful boost when articulated along the lines of Jewish difference.

Rudiger Kramm is one of the most prominent representatives of that generation of architects having stepped out, in the late seventies, of the shadow of their predecessors, who had refounded and developed further Modern architecture in Germany in the three decades after the war. Kramm, with his constantly independent interpretation of brief and spatial context, avoids both the dogma of rigid functionalism and the random qualities of Postmodern aesthetics in order to find an astonishing range of design concepts for the functional quality of buildings, which is a central question for him. Kramm studied at the Technische Hochschule Darmstadt from 1966 to 1972, where the architecture faculty largely bore the stamp of Gunter Behnisch at the time. After gaining his diploma he went on to the University College in London, where he subsequently worked on urban renewal projects with D W Insall. He opened his own office in Darmstadt in 1977. In 1990 he was appointed professor of building construction and design at the University of Karlsruhe; in the same year he made Axel Strigl his office partner. After projects for refurbishing historical building stock and early residential buildings, in which he tried out concepts for energy- and resource-saving construction, Kramm acquired a reputation outside the immediate vicinity with the residential complex in Bessunger Strasse in Darmstadt. This estate, with its sophisticated floor-plan typology and open-space design is still considered an exemplary piece of housing design, in which changing household types and lifestyles are appropriately expressed in terms of design. In 1988 the estate won the Deutscher Stadtebaupreis, and in 1989 it was commended as a model building in Hesse. Housing remains the main focus of the office's work, but it has also been responsible for numerous commercial, administrative and retail buildings, including the Zeilgalerie shopping complex in Frankfurt.

Die vorliegende Arbeit will durch empirische Analysen des Niveaus, der Determinanten, der Entwicklung und der politischen Korrelate von DDR-Nostalgie einen Beitrag zur - batte um die positiven Orientierungen der Ostdeutschen gegenüber der ehemaligen DDR leisten. Bisher liegen nur wenige empirische Untersuchungen zu diesem Thema vor. Diese sind dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass sie häufig nur als „Nebenprodukt“ anderer Fragestell- gen und meist unter Verwendung wechselnder und kaum in bestehende theoretische K- texte eingeordneter Begrifflichkeiten Befunde zur realen Existenz und den Dimensionen derartiger Einstellungsmuster liefern. Eine theoretische Verortung des schillernden Begriffs DDR-Nostalgie und eine umfassende, genuine Analyse dieses Phänomens ist damit eine der grundlegenden Aufgaben dieser Arbeit. Darüber hinaus schließt die vorliegende Studie insbesondere durch die Verwendung von Paneldaten eine Forschungslücke, denn die bis- rigen Erkenntnisse zur Entwicklung der Bindungen der Ostdeutschen an die ehemaligen DDR beruhen nahezu ausschließlich auf Querschnittserhebungen. Im Folgenden wird zunächst die öffentlich-publizistische Auseinandersetzung mit DDR-Nostalgie, Ostalgie und Ostidentität im Überblick dargestellt. Im Anschluss daran wird die Begriffsentwicklung von der „Nostalgie“ zur „DDR-Nostalgie“ in den Blick - nommen. Dann werden unterschiedliche Definitionsansätze, Erklärungs- und Deutungsv- suche der nach 1990 konstatierten positiven Orientierungen der Ostdeutschen gegenüber der ehemaligen DDR vorgestellt und eine Abgrenzung der Begriffe der DDR-Nostalgie, der Ostalgie und der Ostidentität vorgenommen. Ein Überblick über verschiedene theoretis- konzeptionelle Ansätze belegt die Relevanz des Untersuchungsproblems DDR-Nostalgie bzw. der positiven Orientierungen der Ostdeutschen gegenüber der ehemaligen DDR aus unterschiedlichen wissenschaftlichen Perspektiven.

The literary flair of fin-de-siècle Vienna lived on after 1918 in the First Austrian Republic even as writers grappled with the consequences of a lost war and the vanished Habsburg Empire.
