This book analyses the performance and potential of India’s oilseed sector, identifies the major constraints facing the industry and suggests options for increasing the country’s oilseed production and productivity, taking into account the changing policy environment, increasing demand, slow growth in domestic production and rising imports. India as the world’s largest producer of oilseeds, accounts for about 7-8 per cent of global vegetable oil production. However, the growth in domestic production has not kept pace with the growth in demand. Low yields and high production and market risks due to lack of irrigation facilities and effective risk management have been responsible for widening the demand-supply gap over the years, and the country now imports more than half of its oilseed for domestic consumption. The Technology Mission on Oilseeds (TMO), launched in the mid-1980s, helped achieve self-sufficiency in edible oil production through the spread of technology and the provision of market support. However, increasing demand for edible oils necessitated imports in large quantities, leading to a substantial drain on foreign exchange. Given the competing demands on agricultural land from various crops and enterprises, the production of oilseeds can be increased only if productivity is improved significantly and farmers receive remunerative prices and have assured market access. However, farmers face various constraints in oilseed production; several biotic, abiotic, technological, institutional and socio-economic constraints inhibit exploitation of the full yield potential of crops, which need to be addressed. The book explores these issues using data collected from about 2,000 oilseed growers: 490 soybean farmers, 316 rapeseed-mustard growers, 470 groundnut farmers, 250 sesamum farmers and 470 sunflower growers from selected Indian states. It would be of immense use for scholars and policy makers alike who are working in this field.

Oilseed crops are a heterogeneous group of plants without common morphological and genetic features except production of seed oil. Nevertheless, the importance of the seed oil or vegetable fat, has resulted in increased scientific interest in improving the yield and quality of the produce. The Oilseeds sector has been one of the most dynamic components of world agriculture; in the past three decades growing at 4.1% per annum surpassing the growth of agriculture and livestock products. The individual crops forming the conglomerate of Oilseed crops have to be treated differently as well as together for their improvement and production, since they form unique group in terms of research and development, necessitating the development of strategies for their judicious exploitation for a sound farm economy. This book "Oilseed Crops" aims to provide detailed information on the oilseed crops and at the same time elucidating the intricacies faced in improvement and management. Spread over thirteen Chapters, the book covers the oilseed crops, namely, Groundnut, Rapeseed-mustard, Soybean, Sesame, Sunflower, Safflower, Niger, Linseed, Castor and Oil-bearing Trees. Each Chapter includes information on the 'Background of the Plant, ' 'Ecology, ' 'Cytogenetics, ' 'Genetic Resources and Breeding, ' 'Biotechnology, ' 'Important Characteristics, ' 'Diseases and Pests of the Crop, ' 'Production' and 'Products' from the crop. 'Designer Oilseed Crops' is a new concept for the development of novel products of vegetable fats using biotechnology, gene editing and genetic transformation. The book will be useful to researchers, students, agricultural extensionists and all those taking up study of Oilseed Crops.

Brassica oilseeds are one of the few edible oil crops that can be cultivated in the temperate zones of the world, at higher elevations and as winter crops. This comprehensive volume encompasses research and practice in the production and use of Brassica oilseeds. The first section considers each aspect of the field crop including the importance of plant breeding and biotechnology. The impact of the crop on the surrounding environment is also discussed. The second section covers utilization. This is especially important as rapeseed oil has gained high nutritional status in recent years, and this is considered in relation to the human diet. The use of the meal by-product for animal feeds is also discussed. The oil is also used for industrial purposes and derivatives are used in pharmaceuticals and cosmetics. The increased interest in the production and use of biodiesel from Brassica oilseeds is reflected by the inclusion of a chapter on this topic. The contributors are leading specialists from North America, Europe and Australia. The book provides a complete reference resource for students, researchers and practitioners within the disciplines of crop production, plant and food sciences

Oilseeds are a very important component of semi-tropical and tropical agriculture, providing easily available and highly nutritious human and animal food. Many also have industrial uses and are relatively easy to incorporate into locally manufactured products. This book gathers together scientific, economic and field practice information on the most widespread oilseed crops. After a discussion on world production and trade in oilseeds there are separate chapters on castor, groundnut, safflower, sesame, soya and sunflower, crambe, niger and jojoba. A final chapter looks in detail at oilseed processing operations and the great variety of products and uses for oilseeds. This new edition has been completely rewritten to include the latest agricultural research, the influence of biotechnology on crops and processing, and advances in farm machinery and equipment. The book is a valuable reference for all involved directly or indirectly with oilseed production, research and processing.

This publication contains the proceedings of a seminar on 'Production and Utilization of Protein in Oilsead Crops', held at Braunschweig from 8 to 10 July, 1980. The meeting was held under the auspices of the Commission of the European Communities, as part of the EEC Common Research Programme on Plant Protein Improvement. Methods for the intensive production of meat and milk have been adopted to an increasing extent in EEC coun±ries over the past two decades, their success is based on animal diets of high quality, balanced for energy and protein contents. The substantial improvements in cereal yields in EEC over this period has kept pace with the increasing demand for dietary energy in concentrated animal foodstuffs, but provision of the necessary protein supplementation has required ever-increasing imports of soybean products. Grain legumes and oilseed meals are the two main sources of concentrated protein for the animal feeds industry, and there is an urgent need for increased EEC production of both. Seminars on grain legumes have been held at regular intervals since 1976; the meeting at Braunschweig, now reported, was the first to consider in detail the potential contribution from oilseed crops suitable for EEC conditions. Local arrangements for the seminar were made by Professor Dr. M. Dambroth, Dr. C. Sommer, and their colleagues at the Institut fUr Pflanzenbau und Pflanzenzuchtung, Braunschweig - Volkenr6de.

Groundnut, sesame, soybean, and sunflower crops are grown across Myanmar. Nationally, 15 percent of farmers were engaged in oilseed cultivation in the post/pre-monsoon 2023 season, while 17 percent of farmers planted oilseeds in the 2022 monsoon season. Among the agro-ecological zones, the Dry Zone had the largest share of farmers growing oilseeds as their most important non-paddy crop. At the same time, the percentage of farmers who grew oilseeds as their most important non-paddy crop in 2023 declined overall and in the Dry Zone compared to the post/pre monsoon seasons of 2022 and 2021. In the post/pre-monsoon 2023 season, 7 and 6 percent of the farmers grew sesame and groundnut, respectively. Only 2 percent of farmers grew soybeans while 1 percent grew sunflowers. Groundnut, sunflower, and sesame were mainly grown in the Dry Zone, while soybean was mainly grown in the Hills and Mountainous Region. The farm size of oilseed growing households was slightly larger than that of the average crop growing household, 5.7 acres compared with 4.7 acres. Most oilseed farmers specialize in oilseed production and plant more than half of their cultivated acres to oilseeds. Oilseed farmers grew oilseeds on 64 percent of their cultivated acres in the 2023 pre/post monsoon season and 36 percent of their cultivated acres in the monsoon season.
