Traditional Japanese packaging is an art form that applies sophisticated design and natural aesthetics to simple objects. In this elegant presentation of the baskets, boxes, wrappers, and containers that were used in ordinary, day-to-day life, we are offered a stunning example of a time before mass production. Largely constructed of bamboo, rice straw, hemp twine, paper, and leaves, all of the objects shown here are made from natural materials. Through 221 black-and-white photographs of authentic examples of traditional Japanese packaging—with commentary on the origins, materials, and use of each piece—the items here offer a look into a lost art, while also reminding us of the connection to nature and the human imprint of handwork that was once so alive and vibrant in our everyday lives. This classic book was originally published under the title How to Wrap Five More Eggs in 1975. The eminent American designer George Nelson praised the work featured here, saying, “We have come a long, long way from the kind of thing so beautifully presented in this book. To suit the needs of super mass production, the traditional natural materials are too obstreperous . . . and one by one we have replaced them with the docile, predicable synthetics. . . . What we have gained from these [new] materials and wonderfully complicated processes to make up for the general pollution, rush, crowding, noise, sickness, and slickness is a subject for other forums. But what we have lost for sure is what this book is all about: a once-common sense of fitness in the relationships between hand, material, use, and shape, and above all, a sense of delight in the look and feel of very ordinary, humble things. This book is thus . . . a totally unexpected monument to a culture, a way of life, a universal sensibility carried through all objects down to the smallest, most inconsequential, and ephemeral things.” Now, over thirty years later, this revived classic on the art of traditional Japanese packing may leave us with the same response, and the same appreciation for the natural and utile packaging presented in this book.

Pink has become the hottest color in interiors. Quartz Pink was the Pantone color of 2016 and since then the hue has gone from strength to strength, playing a starring role at the 2018 Milan Design Week. "From advertising to design and fashion, millennial pink has taken popular culture by storm, and it isn't going anywhere" House & Garden Pink House Living is a beautiful, practical guide to decorating with pink by Emily Murray of the award-winning The Pink House blog. Emily draws on her recent interiors projects to guide the reader through their own rose-tinted renovations and includes case studies on well-known interiors experts that reveal their use of pink, their go-to paint shades and where they glean "pinkspiration". Pink House Living is not about decorating your home in pink from rooftop to rugs, but a look at how the color can be used alongside other hues—sometimes sparingly, sometimes in spades. Divided up by room, the book uses the color pink and its history as a starting point from which to discuss the decorating process. Readers will be entertained by Emily’s interiors insights and witty turn of phrase while gaining invaluable advice on adding pink—and color in general—to their homes.

Oka written by Harry Swain and has been published by D & M Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-09-18 with Political Science categories.

On July 11, 1990, tension between white and Mohawk people at Oka, just west of Montreal, took a violent turn. At issue was the town's plan to turn a piece of disputed land in the community of Kanesatake into a golf course. Media footage of rock-throwing white residents and armed, masked Mohawk Warriors facing police across barricades shocked the world and galvanized Aboriginal people across the continent. In August, Quebec Premier Robert Bourassa called for the Canadian army to step in. Harry Swain was deputy minister of Indian Affairs throughout the 78 -day standoff, and his recreation of events is dramatic and opinionated. Swain writes frankly about his own role and offers fascinating profiles of the high-level players on the government's side. Swain offers rare insight into the workings of government in a time of crisis, but he also traces what he calls the 200-year tail of history and shows how the Mohawk experience reflects the collision between European and Aboriginal cultures. Twenty years on, health, social and economic indicators for Aboriginals are still shameful. Identifying current flashpoints for Aboriginal land rights across the country, Swain argues that true reconciliation will not be possible until government commits to meaningful reform.

These Hollywood stars and more have turned to Jeff Andrews to deliver his trademark high style to their homes. In his first book, Jeff Andrews guides us through the bold spaces he has created for his celebrity clients, while sharing his philosophy on design, exploring topics such as creating a vision and keeping unexpected choices elegant and cohesive; cultivating cinematic style with sweeping staircases and a feeling of extravagance, while never insisting on buttoned-up formality. Throughout, Andrews reminds us that interiors must be balanced--whether it's making sure that even the most sophisticated house has a sense of welcome, or adding an element of rusticity, like grasscloth walls, to an otherwise sleek modern space. Captivating light fixtures, luxe-yet-comfortable furniture, and carefully curated collections come together for a modern take on old Hollywood glamour that will inspire and instruct. Colorful and fun, this is a sourcebook of cool California living at its best.
