Trembling Earth written by Megan Kate Nelson and has been published by University of Georgia Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005 with History categories.

This innovative history of the Okefenokee Swamp reveals it as a place where harsh realities clashed with optimism, shaping the borderland culture of southern Georgia and northern Florida for over two hundred years. From the formation of the Georgia colony in 1732 to the end of the Great Depression, the Okefenokee Swamp was a site of conflict between divergent local communities. Coining the term “ecolocalism” to describe how local cultures form out of ecosystems and in relation to other communities, Megan Kate Nelson offers a new view of the Okefenokee, its inhabitants, and its rich and telling record of thwarted ambitions, unintended consequences, and unresolved questions. The Okefenokee is simultaneously terrestrial and aquatic, beautiful and terrifying, fertile and barren. This peculiar ecology created discord as human groups attempted to overlay firm lines of race, gender, and class on an area of inherent ambiguity and blurred margins. Rice planters, slaves, fugitive slaves, Seminoles, surveyors, timber barons, Swampers, and scientists came to the swamp with dreams of wealth, freedom, and status that conflicted in varied and complex ways. Ecolocalism emerged out of these conflicts between communities within the Okefenokee and other borderland swamps. Nelson narrates the fluctuations, disconnections, and confrontations embedded in the muck of the swamp and the mire of its disorderly history, and she reminds us that it is out of such places of intermingling and uncertainty that cultures are forged.

The word "family" seems to carry more weight in a small town or rural setting. Without the fast pace and crowded conditions, people with blood ties accumulate and tend to turn to their own for the things that are gained elsewhere from bowling teams, the performing arts, soup kitchens or support groups. The need to be entertained or helpful or competitive or cared for (and about) seems to be more easily and simply met where time and space are plentiful. Those two ingredients are the magnets that always draw family-like friends Noble Stone and Hampton Wormant to South Georgia for healthy doses of kinship and nature, especially the week of the Stone Family Reunion. But even on the trip from Athens, Georgia, trouble starts brewing for the young men and it turns into nightmarish battles in the Okefenokee Swamp to stop the flow of drugs through a protected wilderness. With timing ever a factor and the vastness ever present, it becomes a constant attempt for both sides not to emerge victorious, but to simple endure the harsh treatment of man and nature. Grab your canoe paddle and insect spray and join Noble, Hamp, Jar, Chase, Ty and Byron on the tea-colored water in the Land of the Trembling Earth.

Excerpt from In the Okefenokee: A Story of War Time and the Great Georgia Swamp The double barrels of the gun had been separated from the stock, and were held upright in a shallow tin basin of water from the spring. The ramrod, wrapped carefully with cloth, was drawn back and forth in the barrels, piston fashion, causing the water to be sucked in and sprayed forth from the tubes, and thus removing the accumulations of burnt powder and wadding. I 'm goin' to give her a good cleaning this time, Charley, said the elder boy, and maybe the next time I jump a deer she won't fail me.
