Beginning around 1965, a relatively new craze spread rapidly across the U.S. Collecting antique bottles had been mostly the province of more affluent northern collectors, who had been buying and trading for decades. . . . Times were about to change. The government began a somewhat questionable program known as "urban renewal," where the oldest, poorest, most dilapidated, and often most historic sections of towns were bulldozed flat. Then came the diggers. . . . One of these diggers and collectors was Lowrell Pierce, though Lowrell was not the average collector. He was an illustrator inspired to put every known variation of a Macon bottle to paper. What an amazing and thrilling sight to watch Lowrell hold a bottle in one hand, to see it appear by the skill of his other hand on a blank sheet of white paper. He recorded all the known Macon bottles, many being one of a kind, many passing from his hand back to their owners, perhaps never to be seen again. Lowrell pursued this project with great passion and pride, producing the only book devoted entirely to Macon, Georgia bottles and jugs. Of great interest to bottle collectors, historians, researchers, and anyone who has an interest in the city of Macon, Georgia, this book preserves what urban renewal unearthed. Thanks to the diligence of Lowrell, and now to this book, these bottles will never be lost again. -James T. Hicks (from the introduction)

From the 1890s through the 1920s, the postcard was an extraordinarily popular means of communication, and many of the postcards produced during this "golden age" can today be considered works of art. Postcard photographers traveled the length and breadth of the nation snapping photographs of busy street scenes, documenting local landmarks, and assembling crowds of local children only too happy to pose for a picture. These images, printed as postcards and sold in general stores across the country, survive as telling reminders of an important era in America's history. This fascinating history of Macon, Georgia, showcases more than 200 of the best vintage postcards available.

The rugged character and indomitable spirit of the early pioneers of Stephen F. Austins Texas colony had their roots in a turbulent, distant past. From the early 1600s, their courageous ancestors had pushed westward, leaving the European shores to carve out a new nation from the wilderness. They fled religious and political oppression in search of a better life in which freedom was of supreme importance. Many came with tales of their former struggles in Londonderry, Ireland during the great siege, of terrible massacres and clan rivalries in the times of William Wallace and Robert the Bruce, King of Scotland. They vividly remembered the tribulations of Martin Luther and the deadly religious split with the Catholic Church. More recently, memories of their parents participation in the American Revolution, of dramatic, true life scenes such as depicted in the movie The Patriot filled their minds, their fathers having ridden along side of the wily Swamp Fox, Francis Marion. These pioneers associated themselves with men like Travis, Crockett, Houston and Andrew Jackson. Many of these early trailblazers were Scots-Irish and German immigrants. They were on a westward trek to grasp a special prize, to seal Americas Manifest Destiny. And that prize they sought was Texas. From Jamestown to Texas is the story of these intrepid pioneers and their ancestors who cleared and farmed the land, who fought the Indians, battled the elements, and carved out this wonderful country that we have today.

In recent years, the intersection of religion and the American Civil War has been the focus of a growing area of scholarship. However, primary sources on this subject are housed in many different archives and libraries scattered across the U.S., and are often difficult to find. The Routledge Sourcebook of Religion and the American Civil War collects these sources into a single convenient volume, the most comprehensive collection of primary source material on religion and the Civil War ever brought together. With chapters organized both chronologically and thematically, and highlighting the experiences of soldiers, women, African Americans, chaplains, clergy, and civilians, this sourcebook provides a rich array of resources for scholars and students that highlights how religion was woven throughout the events of the war. Sources collected here include: • Sermons • Song lyrics • Newspaper articles • Letters • Diary entries • Poetry • Excerpts from books and memoirs • Artwork and photographs Introductions by the editor accompany each chapter and individual document, contextualizing the sources and showing how they relate to the overall picture of religion and the war. Beginning students of American history and seasoned scholars of the Civil War alike will greatly benefit from having easy access to the full texts of original documents that illustrate the vital role of religion in the country’s most critical conflict.
