Excerpt from Old Rome and New Italy: Recuerdos De Italia This book is the record of the lively emotions awakened in my soul by the marvelous spectacles of Italy. It is not a book of travels. I have not designed to add one more to the excellent works we already possess in Castilian upon the artistic nation, for these are in the hands of all travelers. When a people, a monument, or a landscape made a profound impression on my mind, I took my pen and hastened to communicate that feeling to my readers with all fidelity. I have not, then, followed any order or itinerary in my book. I have placed my pictures where it seemed best, so that they do not bear any particular relation to each other; and I have sometimes returned to a town from which I seemed to have departed. Each picture may therefore form a separate work. In these pages there is but little of the present life and manners of Italy. With that nation, the longer it lives the more it recollects. We must look at it historically and aesthetically. We must endeavor to connect its great monuments with the ages in which they were constructed, with the generations to which they owe their creation. Excerpt from A Short History of Rome and Italy There are two kinds of. Art. In one the ideal comes into form by accretion, in the other by elimination.' You may lavishly apply pigments until you have built up your ideal, or you may cut away superfiuities until you have reached it. History may partake of either or both of these methods. It may be presented as a sumptuous picture on a generous canvas, rich in color and be wildering in detail, or it may be reached like a cameo, by cutting away every shining particle which obscures the clear simple out line, with perhaps just a sparing use of pig ment here and there to intensify the relief. Whichever method be chosen, failure is al ways imminent, and the difficulties prodigi ous. But as a general proposition, it is easier to say things, than to refrain from saying them, especially if one's theme be Rome and Italy, when no fragment seems superfluous. To tell the story of the Italian peninsula from the days of Eneas to the present time, in less than three hundred small pages, is not an easy task! Two daemons perpetually attend you, one whispering that you are omit ting matter essential to the narrative; the other insisting that you are amplifying en tirely too much.
