A German-born Jew, Olga Benario was one of the most remarkable Communist activists of the twentieth century. With a genius for organization and an unwavering devotion, she crisscrossed the globe educating and activating legions to combat the worldwide plagues of Nazism and fascism. At the age of nineteen, she masterminded a daring prison raid to free her lover, the Communist intellectual Otto Braun. Together they escaped to Moscow, where they quickly rose in the ranks of the international Communist movement. At twenty-six, Benario was chosen to serve as bodyguard to the legendary Brazilian guerrilla leader Luis Carlos Prestes, who had been brought to Moscow for training and would soon become her new lover. Traveling under assumed names, they crossed Europe and North America to reach Brazil, where Prestes would launch a revolution against the fascist regime. But tragically, within months, they were seized by police. From Brazil, Olga, then seven months pregnant, was deported to Nazi Germany. She was subsequently sent to Ravensbruck concentration camp, and in February 1942 she was sent to her death in the gas chambers at Bernburg.

Após a abertura dos arquivos da Gestapo, essa filha, a historiadora Anita Leocadia Prestes, debruçou-se sobre as cerca de 2 mil páginas, recheadas de documentos inéditos, para trazer à tona informações até então desconhecidas. Com base nos documentos, a autora constrói uma narrativa cronológica que vai da inserção da jovem Olga na luta política até sua morte na câmara de gás do campo de concentração de Bernburg, em abril de 1942, revelando a firmeza inabalável da revolucionária. Enquanto, na prisão, Olga nutria esperanças de conseguir asilo em outro país, e, fora dela, sua sogra e sua cunhada faziam de tudo para que ela fosse libertada, os nazistas nunca consideraram essa hipótese. No entanto, ela jamais se curvou a seus algozes, jamais entregou companheiros e nem sequer revelou suas atividades políticas, ainda que a chantageassem com a perspectiva de voltar a ver a filha. Após o relato biográfico há um caderno de fotos e uma série de anexos com a reprodução de documentos, como o passaporte que Olga se negou a assinar, fotos encontradas no arquivo da Gestapo e a tradução e a reprodução da correspondência inédita de Olga e Prestes, entre outros. Mais do que peças faltantes no quebra-cabeça da história, os documentos reproduzidos nessa obra nos permitem enxergar o presente com outros olhos.
