Fast ebenso alt ist die Kontroverse um mögliche Auswirkungen von Gewalt im Film auf den Zuschauer. Im Falle von besonders extremen Formen der Gewaltdarstellung kommt immer wieder die Frage auf, ob diese Gewalt eine potentielle Gefahr darstellen könnte, ob der Zuschauer gar animiert wird selbst Gewalt anzuwenden. Jedoch ist Gewalt im Film meist nicht einfach 'Gewalt um der Gewalt willen', sondern sie trägt eine Bedeutung in sich, soll eine bestimmte Botschaft des jeweiligen Films übermitteln. Gewaltdarstellung im Film ist auch immer ein künstlerisches Stilmittel. Sie hat ihre eigene Ästhetik und kann, losgelöst von ihrer Bedeutung, als Kunstform betrachtet werden. Die folgende Arbeit soll am Beispiel von Oliver Stone's Film Natural Born Killers die Frage erörtern, ob extreme Gewalt im Film ein gefährliches Vorbild ist oder als ästhetischer Genuß gesehen werden kann. Hierbei soll und kann die Frage keiner endgültigen Beantwortung zugeführt werden. Vielmehr sollen die verschiedenen Seiten von Gewalt im Film betrachtet werden. Im weiteren Verlauf der Arbeit werde ich für den Filmtitel Natural Born Killers die gebräuchliche Abkürzung NBK verwenden. Nach einer kurzen Einführung in die Kontroverse um NBK, werden zunächst die möglichen Auswirkungen von Gewaltdarstellungen anhand der Erkenntnisse der Wirkungsforschung dargelegt und in Bezug zu NBK gesetzt, um dann über die intendierte Bedeutung der Gewalt in NBK auf die Bedeutung des Films als Kunstwerk und die Ästhetik der Gewalt zu kommen.
