Né en 1920, Olivier Debré est l'un des artistes les plus personnels du mouvement abstrait " lyrique " qui s'épanouit à Paris autour des années cinquante, terme auquel il lui préfère celui " d'abstraction fervente ". Tout son œuvre, élaboré depuis 1944, témoigne de sa quête du réel entièrement revécu, où le paysage à la fois mental et sensuel relève son désir d'espace et de mouvement, comme l'expriment les toiles monumentales de ces dernières années, et notamment les rideaux de scène pour la Comédie-Française et le Théâtre des Abbesses à Paris. Ce rapport à la monumentalité lui a fait aborder la sculpture dès 1962 ainsi que l'architecture. " Signe Personnage ", puis " Signe paysage " traduisent une réalité physique de la peinture qui ne serait, selon Debré, " que du temps devenu espace ". Quand il ne voyage pas, il vient se ressourcer sur les bords de la Loire, dans la propriété familiale des Madères. " En peignant dans la nature je traduis l'émotion qui est en moi devant le paysage, mais pas le paysage ", dit-il. Cette quête d'une poésie de la nature, Olivier Debré en a fait une éthique de vie.
