In 1980 Froebel, Heinrichs and Kreye published the English-language The New International Division of Labour, trying to highlight the consequences of market reorganization after the crisis of the mid 1970s, which was soon to transform into so-called globalization. A third of a century later, the "fantastic adventure" of market integration seems to have been crystallized by the 2007-2008 crisis, opening a further period of great instability. But the geography of wealth production has transformed radically and appears unrecognizable to the early-80s scholar. In a framework of great social, political and cultural change, China, a country at the time defined as an "economic dwarf", is the second largest economy on the planet and has become its "factory". The standardizing concept of "Third World" having vanished, some former colonial economies have undertaken rapid growth processes, while others have ruinously accentuated their underdevelopment. The traditionally advanced regions, then defined as "industrial", have opened out into trajectories defined, vice versa, as "post-industrial", some consolidating their competitive edge and others sparking lengthy declines.

This book presents the work of Gianfranco Battisti, on Geopolitics and Border Geographies in north-eastern Italy, Europeanization, and Globalization, contributing to debates on the inclusion of non-English speaking scholars in international geography. It highlights the institutions and cultures that shaped more than fifty years of his writing, as they emerged through his biography, theoretical contributions, and methods. Battisti uses historical geographies as tools to explain contemporary geopolitics while maintaining a high attentiveness to data-driven research. He applies these tools to investigate ‘geographical facts’ at the local, regional and global scale, viewed from the distinctive viewpoint of the city of Trieste, a laboratory of geopolitical change for more than two centuries. To better understand the importance of place in the production of geographical theories and methods, this book discusses Battisti’s biography in the context of the Triestino School of geography that started from the same French and German classics that shaped Anglo-American geography in the 19th century to later express original features. This book explains such features by introducing the concept of Geography as an industry that operates in a local and global context. It then deploys the methods Battisti developed within his school to discuss the realities and problems of borderlands in a historic and local context during the first and second World Wars and the geopolitical rationale that shaped the times between. The book continues to give an outlook, on how Europe reconstructed itself geopolitically, the implications thereof, and a comparison of how this fits in with geopolitical agendas on a global scale.

La Cina sta attraversando un periodo molto difficile. La leadership attuale deve confrontarsi con sfide complesse su tre fronti: politico, economico e sociale. Da paese povero ma sostanzialmente egualitario, la Cina si è trasformata in una nazione in cui il tasso di disuguaglianza è così alto da minacciare crescita economica e stabilità sociale. Da realtà prevalentemente agricola e poco integrata nell’economia mondiale, la Cina è ora una nazione molto più ricca in cui, però, quella che un tempo era considerata una risorsa infinita, la forza lavoro a basso costo, ora non è più così abbondante, e dove anche la capacità manifatturiera di un tempo fatica a convivere con una domanda globale che continua a contrarsi e un’emergenza ambientale da affrontare con urgenza. Infine, da paese prevalentemente concentrato su sé stesso e con una limitata capacità di influenzare gli equilibri internazionali, la Cina è diventata una nazione “aggressiva”, “pericolosa”, da “contenere”, o quanto meno è percepita come tale. L’amministrazione di Xi Jinping è salita al potere nel 2012 riconoscendo l’urgenza di prendere decisioni importanti per affrontare tutte le sfide cui il paese si trovava di fronte. L’alba di una nuova era all’insegna di “profonde riforme onnicomprensive” venne dunque annunciata, ma quattro anni dopo la Cina continua ad essere una nazione in difficoltà, tanto sul piano politico quanto su quello socio-economico. Consapevole della forte retorica nazionalista che regolarmente accompagna e sostiene le scelte di Pechino e con un occhio al 19esimo Congresso del Partito comunista cinese (18 ottobre 2017), il volume “L’era di Xi Jinping: bilanci e prospettive future” si pone tre obiettivi importanti: valutare successi e fallimenti dei primi quattro anni della Presidenza Xi; discutere i possibili provvedimenti che potrebbero aiutare a la Cina a risolvere alcune delle sue difficoltà; e provare a capire se l’amministrazione Xi ha la volontà, la capacità e il sostegno istituzionale per implementare le agognate riforme.
