Omega was entrusted with timekeeping at the Los Angeles Olympic Games in 1932 and has since been the official timekeeper at 22 Olympics. That association has led to more than half a century of pioneering developments in timers and watches, from the first water-resistant photoelectric cell to the first photo-finish camera (an innovation that resolved the problem of group finishes in track events), and contact pads inside the pool at swimming competitions. They have continued to innovate, most recently with real time results online, available as soon as a swimmer hits the pool wall at the end of a lap. Yet it is the most tangible, touchable, wearable results of all this that brings Omega watches from the workplaces of athletes (including Michelle Wie and Michael Phelps) into the homes of design aficionados. John Goldberger, the editor of Omega Watches and Longines Watches here presents more than 50 years of rare and beautiful sport designs from the Omega line.

In this guide to modern sports watches, discover honest assessments of luxury sports models, many varieties of chronographs, GMTs, and extreme diving watches, represented by the best sports brands in the world, including Patek Philippe, Breitling, Omega, Chronoswiss, and more. But first, what exactly is a sports watch? Jewelers, connoisseurs, and the editors have agreed on the following definition: a sporty-looking timepiece, usually made of steel, that stays on your arm whether you're racing, diving, or flying. In the 1970s, Gérald Genta designed three classic sports watches that challenged conservative styles and remained virtually unmodified for more than thirty years. Using Genta's legacy as a starting point, this new book traces the evolution of the sports watch to today, focusing on the 21st century, from simple, robust steel watches with three hands to more complicated timepieces, with detailed technical comparisons between models, some of which are already considered classics.

John Goldberger has been collecting and studying vintage watches for over 25 years, which means he's spent many happy hours at jewelers' shops, flea markets, conventions and auctions around the world. His comprehensive and detailed illustrated book on the Omega family of Swiss timepieces is an indispensable asset to others who share his obsession, and to those who would love to--to armchair collectors. Omega Watches covers the history of more than 240 vintage models, with emphasis on their outer aspects--including the shape and outline of each case and its dial and movements, which are governing features for the collector, as well as clues to exceptional internal design. Goldberg has created a beautiful visual guide to Omega timepieces from the classic pocketwatch to the modern chronograph. Starting with the first models of the past century, Omega Watches displays the beauty, complexity and the collectibility of classic watches such as the Speedmaster, first produced in 1957, and the Seamaster, both of which are still produced today. All examples depicted are from private collections.

- A new edition of this bestseller, updated and expanded to include watches from 2020 One small step for a man, a giant leap for mankind and an extraordinary destiny for the watch that accompanied Man's first steps on the Moon, thereby becoming the greatest icon in watchmaking history: the Omega Speedmaster "Moonwatch". Introduced to the public by Omega in 1957, the Speedmaster was designed for mainly sporting purposes, such as in motor racing. However, its fate took a completely different turn in the early 1960s. Astronauts going to space, some of whom wore a Speedmaster for private use, wanted to be officially equipped with a reliable, accurate and resistant watch. For this reason, NASA undertook a series of rigorous tests in extreme conditions in 1964 to select the best chronograph to accompany them on their space missions. The Omega Speedmaster won these tests and was officially certified ("Flight Qualified for All Manned Space Missions") by NASA on March 1, 1965 for the Gemini project. It was in July 1969 that it truly made history, serving the astronauts of the Apollo 11 mission (Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins) for man's first steps on the Moon. This book retraces an extraordinary epic and the evolution of a unique and timeless watch which, from its beginnings in 1957 through to the current models, has remained endlessly fascinating. Updated and expanded to include watches from 2020.
