Thence the course lay along the Bitter Root River, crossing and re-crossing the frozen stream. Some of the passengers, noting the wintry aspect of the landscape, began to regret a trip undertaken on the Northern Pacific in mid-December. But then this was not a pleasure trip. The few passengers were on their way of necessity; those who could defer a journey until a pleasanter season had remained at home. The employes said that they had not had so light a train for many months, and added grimly that no doubt it "was well, for ten to one they would get stuck."
