This provocative book tells the amazing story of how winning at all costs became a way of life in intercollegiate football as played by West Point; how cheating to maintain academic proficiency for football players was seen as desirable to further the academy's winning tradition. In the early 1950s, the U.S. Military Academy at West Point stood tall as a bastion of national character, extolling the virtues of duty, honor, & country. The Army Team embodied the commitment to developing our country's strongest leaders, both on & off the gridiron. This book explores how America's deep-rooted obsession with college football & desire to win at all costs became a way of life for many of Coach Red Blaik's cadet-athletes. In August 1951, big time football led to big time corruption when 83 cadets, most of whom were on the football team -- were expelled from West Point for cheating. The outcome of the scandal was to have a lasting impact on America's military.

Real Soldiering written by Brian McAllister Linn and has been published by University Press of Kansas this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-06-23 with History categories.

What happens to the US Army after the battles are over, the citizen soldiers depart, and all that remains is the Regular Army? In this pathbreaking work, Brian Linn argues that in each decade following every major conflict since the War of 1812 the postwar army has undergone a long, painful, and remarkably consistent recovery process as it struggled to build a new model force to replace the “Old Army” that entered the conflict. Departing from the Washington-centric institutional histories of the past, Linn sets his focus on soldiering in the field, distilling the lived experiences of officers and troopers who were responsible for cleaning up the messes left in the wake of war. Real Soldiering provides the first comprehensive study of the US Army’s transition from war to peace. It is both a wide-ranging history of the army’s postwar experience and a work detailing the commonalities of American soldiering over almost two centuries. Linn challenges three common historical interpretations: confusing Washington policy with implementation in the field; conflating postwar armies with prewar armies; and describing certain postwar eras as distinct and transformational. Rather, Linn examines the postwar force as a distinct entity worthy of study as a unique and important part of US Army history. He identifies the common dilemmas faced by the service in the aftermath of every war. These problems included such military priorities as defense legislation, preparing for the next war, and adapting to new missions. But they also incorporated often overlooked—but for those who lived through them more important—consistencies such as officer acquisition and career management, personnel turbulence, insufficient personnel and equipment, and many others. Real Soldiering represents over four decades of research into the US Army and is deeply informed by Linn’s experiences teaching and working with soldiers. It breaks new ground in lifting out the similarities of each postwar army while still appreciating their individual complexities. It identifies the leaders and the methods the service employed to escape the inevitable postwar drawdowns. Insightful and entertaining, provocative and empathetic, and a work of history with immediate relevance, Real Soldiering will resonate with military historians, defense analysts, and those who have proudly worn the US Army uniform.

Pursuing The Honorable written by Justin M. Anderson and has been published by Rowman & Littlefield this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-05-15 with Political Science categories.

Pursuing the Honorable argues that our modern understanding of honor, as seen through example of today’s military training, is deficient. To remedy this, the book returns to an understanding of the honorable good, especially manifested for philosophers like Aristotle and Cicero in a life of the human virtues. However, because honor as defined by the honorable good needs to be applicable to the 21st Century occidental world of liberal democratic values, the study includes careful attention to those conditions under which honor can once again become a live option. While special attention is given to military training, including concrete proposals for its renewal, what the study discovers extends to many forms of human life

The Hebrew Orphan Asylum Band of New York City, 1874–1941 is at the same time the story of a boys’ band and a story of New York City. The band was not only an important educational component of one of the largest Jewish charitable organizations of its time, but also a significant source of music-making and performance in New York. What made the band especially noteworthy was the reputation it developed performing outside of New York’s many concert halls and major musical institutions. The band was ever-present, participating in events ranging from conventional parades to building ground-breakings to celebrations of major figures in New York history. The band was always ready to perform and to be part of New York cultural life. In doing so, they typified the Jewish-American experience of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and illustrated the substantial effort of those that engage in community music-making and the critical role school music played in the lives of its participants and local community. These are the unknown musicians without whom New York’s musical life would have certainly been diminished. As this history explores their numerous performances, successes, and activities, historical events in New York, some lesser known than others, some humorous, some dark, are described in rich detail as well. The legacy of the band – the careers the boys had as they matured and the contributions they and their band directors made during their lives – is also explored in this fascinating history.

Mr Inside And Mr Outside written by Jack Cavanaugh and has been published by Triumph Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-09-01 with Sports & Recreation categories.

Heisman Trophy winners Glenn Davis and Felix Blanchard—renowned during their playing days at West Point as "Mr. Inside and Mr. Outside"—were the best-known college football players in the country between 1944 and 1946, and Army was the nation's top-ranked team under legendary coach Red Blaik. Acclaimed author Jack Cavanaugh takes readers through the Black Knights' three consecutive National Championship seasons, including the 1946 "Game of the Century" between Army and Notre Dame, the only college game to date to have included four Heisman Trophy winners. Cavanaugh also examines the impact the war had on Army's success—because its players were already considered to be in the military and thus deferred from active duty while students at West Point, Army featured many outstanding high school and prep school players in those years. A unique look at the changes that took place in sports and almost every aspect of American life in the wake of World War II, this book a must-read for fans of college football and military buffs in addition to Army fans.
