After a preliminary survey of the major interpretative disputes over the understanding of Kant on God, Byrne explores his critique of philosophical proofs of God’s existence. Examining Kant’s account of religious language, Byrne highlights both the realist and anti-realist elements contained within it. The notion of the highest good is then explored, with its constituent elements - happiness and virtue, in pursuit of an assessment of how far Kant establishes that we must posit God. The precise role God plays in ethics according to Kant is then examined, along with the definition of religion as the recognition of duties as divine commands. Byrne also plots Kant’s critical re-working of the concept of grace. Adrio Kšnig is among those theologians in South Africa who are attempting to break away from a traditional fundamentalist approach to the Bible typical of an older Dutch generation raised on the Neo-Calvinism of Abraham Kuyper. This younger generation of Reformed theologians from South Africa wants to make use of a far wider theological spectrum than merely the Netherlands. This book, focusing on the doctrine of God, is an excellent example of contemporary theological thinking by an outstanding member of this generation. Kšnig strongly asserts that his book is unlike most doctrines of God in that it is not about God-in-himself as is most scholastic and classical Protestant theology, but rather about God in certain relationships: While God does exist over and above his relationships and his actions and is thus more and greater than his deeds and relationships . . . it is only through his deeds and relationships that we know God. Kšnig goes on to explore specifically four relationships--God to the gods, God to man, God to history, and God to the future.

I read the Bible as an intellectual exercise as well as a spiritual one. I wanted to read about those who walked and talked with God. I wanted to learn about the prophets and writers of accepted sacred scripture. There are many quotes taken from the Bible, and many quotes on the Bible. People are always commenting on God. Atheists are obsessed with God or the lack thereof. There are a lot of thoughts on God out there. Some are captured within this book and their purpose is to raise spiritual awareness in all of us. I was looking to feel the love from God for mankind right from the start when God created man, and man immediately started recreating God. God created us in his image, and we started recreating God through anthropomorphism, or attempting to change his divinity into humanity so we could better understand him. Reading through the New Testament, I found that the number three has divine significance which figured largely in many events in Jesus' life. I devoted a whole chapter to this mystery, and I am still investigating these occurrences of three throughout the Bible. Is this a peek into the divine consciousness? I believe, like a lot of people, that life is a journey. Some believe the end of the journey is death or final peace from the chaos and messes of life no consciousness. For them, there is no God. Others believe the end of the journey is the transition into our final form as spiritual beings when the soul goes over to the afterlife. I believe we all have a purpose and our personal relationship with God throughout our lives reveals it.
