This edited book, as you can see from its title, is about learning, or at least about the concept and practice of learning. The contributors to this volume are focusing on two meta-concepts, knowledge and learning, on the relationship between the two, and the way these can be framed in epistemic, social, political and economic terms. Knowledge and learning, as meta-concepts, are positioned in various networks or constellations of meaning, principally: the antecedents of the concepts, their relations to other relevant concepts, and the way the concepts are used in the lifeworld. In this book the various authors explore a number of important concepts that are relevant to the idea of learning. These are meta-concepts such as epistemology, inferential role semantics, phenomenology, rationality, thinking, hermeneutics, critical realism and pragmatism, and meso-concepts such as probability, woman, training, assessment, education, system, race, friendship, Bildung, curriculum, ecology and pedagogy. Like David Scott’s first volume of On Learning, this collection focusing on philosophy, concepts and practices is a response to empiricist and positivist conceptions of knowledge. It challenges detheorised and reductionist ideas of learning that have filtered through to the management of our schools, colleges and universities; over-simplified messages about learning, knowledge, curriculum and assessment; and fostered the denial that values are central to understanding how we live and how we should live – the normative dimension to social policy and social theorising. This book is also an attempt at a Bildungstheorie.

This volume traces the socialization process, professional development, career paths, and theory and research of contemporary pioneers in education and psychology. This volume contains interviews with leading scholars who are at the vanguard of teaching and learning. They shared how their childhood development influenced their theoretical paths and research endeavors and revealed their thoughts, beliefs, and experiences that made them who they are today. These scholars responded to questions pertaining to their childhood, initial interest in education and psychology, role models, research interests and major findings, future directions of their research, educational implications derived from their research, and perception of their legacy. They are real people who have had experiences like anybody else, but found homes and teachers who supported them. While in college, they found educators who mentored them. Readers will find that this volume offers them an opportunity to learn the background of contemporary pioneers in education and psychology, provides valuable sources where they can learn about how major theories developed and where they are moving, and reveals the personal anecdotes that influenced the conceptualization of contemporary theories and research. Educators and students will find that this book provides hope and a rejuvenated enthusiasm about the status of education and psychology and that they too can be leaders in their own ways.

This second volume of Diverse Pedagogical Approaches to Experiential Learning (Palgrave, 2020) contains a new collection of experiential learning (EL) reflections, case studies, and strategies written by twenty-eight authors across sixteen academic disciplines. Like the first volume, the chapters describe the process of developing, implementing, facilitating, expanding, and assessing EL in courses, programs, and centers both locally and globally. The authors take on new themes in this collection, including discussions on the intersections of experiential learning with race and privilege, cross-cultural competencies, power and gender, professional development and vocational discernment, self-inquiry and reflection, social justice, and more. The authors also address the importance of adapting new pedagogical approaches to EL in response to challenges in higher education presented by the global coronavirus pandemic.

This extraordinary three-volume work, written in an engaging and rigorous style by a world authority in the field, provides an accessible, comprehensive introduction to the full spectrum of mathematical and statistical techniques underpinning contemporary methods in data-driven learning and inference. This second volume, Inference, builds on the foundational topics established in volume I to introduce students to techniques for inferring unknown variables and quantities, including Bayesian inference, Monte Carlo Markov Chain methods, maximum-likelihood estimation, hidden Markov models, Bayesian networks, and reinforcement learning. A consistent structure and pedagogy is employed throughout this volume to reinforce student understanding, with over 350 end-of-chapter problems (including solutions for instructors), 180 solved examples, almost 200 figures, datasets and downloadable Matlab code. Supported by sister volumes Foundations and Learning, and unique in its scale and depth, this textbook sequence is ideal for early-career researchers and graduate students across many courses in signal processing, machine learning, statistical analysis, data science and inference.

Due to the success of Microbiome and Machine Learning, which collected research results and perspectives of researchers working in the field of machine learning (ML) applied to the analysis of microbiome data, we are launching the second volume to collate any new findings in the field to further our understanding and encourage the participation of experts worldwide in the discussion. The success of ML algorithms in the field is substantially due to their capacity to process high-dimensional data and deal with uncertainty and noise. However, to maximize the combinatory potential of these emerging fields (microbiome and ML), researchers have to deal with some aspects that are complex and inherently related to microbiome data. Microbiome data are convoluted, noisy and highly variable, and non-standard analytical methodologies are required to unlock their clinical and scientific potential. Therefore, although a wide range of statistical modelling and ML methods are available, their application is only sometimes optimal when dealing with microbiome data.

Structural Learning Volume 2 written by Joseph M. Scandura and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-09-13 with Psychology categories.

Originally published in 1976, this title is an edited volume and reflects the major approaches being taken in structural learning at the time. Chapter 1 deals with the basic question of whether competence (knowledge) should be characterized in terms of rules (automata), on the one hand, or associations on the other. The bulk of Chapter 2 is devoted to a series of earlier experiments on rule learning by the editor and his associates. The two contributions in Chapter 3 deal with graph theoretical models. Piagetian models constitute the subject of Chapter 4. Chapter 5 deals with attempts to stimulate human behaviour with a computer. Chapter 6 ranges over a wide variety of competence models, with particular reference to logic and mathematics. In Chapter 7 the editor proposes a new theory of structural learning, together with some empirical results.
