This book is intended as a self-contained exposition of hyperbolic functional dif ferential inequalities and their applications. Its aim is to give a systematic and unified presentation of recent developments of the following problems: (i) functional differential inequalities generated by initial and mixed problems, (ii) existence theory of local and global solutions, (iii) functional integral equations generated by hyperbolic equations, (iv) numerical method of lines for hyperbolic problems, (v) difference methods for initial and initial-boundary value problems. Beside classical solutions, the following classes of weak solutions are treated: Ca ratheodory solutions for quasilinear equations, entropy solutions and viscosity so lutions for nonlinear problems and solutions in the Friedrichs sense for almost linear equations. The theory of difference and differential difference equations ge nerated by original problems is discussed and its applications to the constructions of numerical methods for functional differential problems are presented. The monograph is intended for different groups of scientists. Pure mathemati cians and graduate students will find an advanced theory of functional differential problems. Applied mathematicians and research engineers will find numerical al gorithms for many hyperbolic problems. The classical theory of partial differential inequalities has been described exten sively in the monographs [138, 140, 195, 225). As is well known, they found applica tions in differential problems. The basic examples of such questions are: estimates of solutions of partial equations, estimates of the domain of the existence of solu tions, criteria of uniqueness and estimates of the error of approximate solutions.

"The solution to quasilinear first order hyperbolic systems of equations may be interpretated in terms of waves, which belong to a certain function class and propagate in some suitable space, the work all has a common feature the fact that it adds to the understanding of what may be called nonlinear wave propagation" - preface.

This graduate textbook provides a self-contained introduction to the classical theory of partial differential equations (PDEs). Through its careful selection of topics and engaging tone, readers will also learn how PDEs connect to cutting-edge research and the modeling of physical phenomena. The scope of the Third Edition greatly expands on that of the previous editions by including five new chapters covering additional PDE topics relevant for current areas of active research. This includes coverage of linear parabolic equations with measurable coefficients, parabolic DeGiorgi classes, Navier-Stokes equations, and more. The “Problems and Complements” sections have also been updated to feature new exercises, examples, and hints toward solutions, making this a timely resource for students. Partial Differential Equations: Third Edition is ideal for graduate students interested in exploring the theory of PDEs and how they connect to contemporary research. It can also serve as a useful tool for more experienced readers who are looking for a comprehensive reference.

This book presents the majority of talks given at an International Converence held recently at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow. The works presented focus on the analysis of mathematical models of systems evolving with time. The main topics are semigroups and related subjects connected with applications to partial differential equations of evolution type. Topics of particular interest include spectral and asymptotic properties of semigroups, B evolution scattering theory, and coagulation fragmentation phenomena.

This book deals with the mathematical side of the theory of shock waves. The author presents what is known about the existence and uniqueness of generalized solutions of the initial value problem subject to the entropy conditions. The subtle dissipation introduced by the entropy condition is investigated and the slow decay in signal strength it causes is shown.

Handbook Of Differential Equations Evolutionary Equations written by C.M. Dafermos and has been published by Elsevier this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005-10-05 with Mathematics categories.

The aim of this Handbook is to acquaint the reader with the current status of the theory of evolutionary partial differential equations, and with some of its applications. Evolutionary partial differential equations made their first appearance in the 18th century, in the endeavor to understand the motion of fluids and other continuous media. The active research effort over the span of two centuries, combined with the wide variety of physical phenomena that had to be explained, has resulted in an enormous body of literature. Any attempt to produce a comprehensive survey would be futile. The aim here is to collect review articles, written by leading experts, which will highlight the present and expected future directions of development of the field. The emphasis will be on nonlinear equations, which pose the most challenging problems today. . Volume I of this Handbook does focus on the abstract theory of evolutionary equations. . Volume 2 considers more concrete problems relating to specific applications. . Together they provide a panorama of this amazingly complex and rapidly developing branch of mathematics.
