What form should Europe take? Should it be based on ‘nation states’ or ‘states of nations’? On what basis should European unification proceed? Should it be an élite undertaking pioneered by statesmen elected to democratic government offices, or should true unification also demand a significant European cultural forum open to spokesmen and –women representing the continent’s nationality groups? Was the League of Nations really such a thing? Or was it a League of States? All these questions were posed by Ewald Ammende and his fellow minority associates during the 1920s. Coming to terms with the consequences of collapsed empires and at least four years of conflict, they were forced to consider how best to re-build their continent as if it were a tabula rasa. In the process, they provided intelligent, perceptive analyses of the national and international affairs of the day, particularly as they affected Central and Eastern Europe. Their voices, reflecting their status as national minorities and a geographical location beyond the borders of the post-war Great Powers, deserve to be written more thoroughly into the history of the interwar years. Their ideas still provide food for thought even today.

The right to plead and manage one's own cause is under siege, primarily due to a lack of information to guide the self-represented litigant through the murky waters of the legal system and a concerted effort by legal professionals to discourage the practice in order to maintain their monopoly on legal services. This book is written, from the point of view of the pro se litigant, by a pro se litigant, for other pro se litigants so that the exercise of our right to self-represent shall endure. No legal training or previous experience is needed to understand the language or concepts of the book. The pages that follow detail more than just laws, procedures and legal concepts; they also address strategic considerations and insights that will be invaluable to a self-represented litigant. This book will allow the self-represented litigant to handle his or her divorce like an experienced professional. This text is directed at three primary audiences. First, it is meant for the person who has already decided to self-represent, regardless of the reasons or personal circumstances, and is seeking a comprehensive resource to assist in the process. Second, it is intended for the potential self-represented litigant, the person who is still wrestling with the decision and who wants to know what the process entails and what knowledge and skills are required in order to make an informed decision. Third, it is written for the person who has already made the decision to hire a lawyer but who seeks to proactively manage his or her case and, more importantly, his or her lawyer, which will likely lead to a better outcome and a smaller legal bill. This book offers a means for persons to free themselves from the tyranny of lawyers and other legal professionals. When it comes to divorce, lawyers have an indisputable and unconscionable conflict of interest. They have a perverse incentive to ensure that the divorce process is as contentious as possible, to make it last longer than is strictly necessary, to take cases to trial needlessly and to work in collusion with opposing lawyers against their clients' interests, all to maximize legal fees. Much thought and attention has been dedicated to organizing the information in this book so that it is easy to access and consume on an as-needed basis. Divorces unfold in distinct phases over time, so information does not have to be consumed all at once. There will be ample time to learn what is needed over the course of the proceedings. Special attention is paid to the preparation of the pro se litigant for trial. Although only five percent of all divorce cases go to trial, self-represented litigants must have the knowledge and skills necessary to take their cases to trial or the mere threat of a trial by the opposing party will induce them to accept egregious settlements. It is, after all, only the weighing of the respective cases, in the context of a possible trial, that allows the parties to settle without a trial - a paradox of sorts. The author, Victor Prince, holds a master's degree in engineering from Cornell University and an MBA from Stanford University. His training as an engineer helped him to approach the topic with the rigor and thoroughness of a scientist in order to understand and decipher the process, and he relied on his business background to translate the lessons that he learned as a pro se litigant into a book that allows readers with no legal training to represent themselves in divorce cases. This book was written by the author's present-day self to the author's past self. It is meant to be the definitive resource that he longed for at the time of his divorce, but nothing like this book was available then. It represents hundreds of hours spent researching and distilling information about divorce. The author wants to share with readers everything that he has learned so that they are well equipped to act on their own behalf.
