Widely considered the greatest and most influential of the English Romantic poets, William Wordsworth (1770-1850) remains today among the most admired and studied of all English writers. He is best remembered for the poems he wrote between 1798 and 1806, the period most fully represented in this selection of 39 of his most highly regarded works. Among them are poems from the revolutionary Lyrical Ballads of 1798, including the well-known "Lines Composed a Few Miles Above Tintern Abby"; the famous "Lucy" series of 1799; the political and social commentaries of 1802; the moving "I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud"; and the great "Ode: Intimations of Immortality from Recollections of Early Childhood"--all reprinted from an authoritative edition. Republication of a selection of 39 poems reprinted from The Complete Poetical Works of William Wordsworth: Student's Cambridge Edition, published by the Houghton Mifflin Company, Boston (The Riverside Press, Cambridge), 1904. Detailed contents. Alphabetical lists of titles and first lines. 80pp. 53/8 x 81/2. Paperbound.

Another wild, expansive collection from the eternally surprising Pulitzer Prize–winning poet Smuggling diesel; Ben-Hur (the movie, yes, but also Lew Wallace's original book, and Seosamh Mac Grianna's Gaelic translation); a real trip to Havana; an imaginary trip to the Château d'If: Paul Muldoon's newest collection of poems, his twelfth, is exceptionally wide-ranging in its subject matter—as we've come to expect from this master of self-reinvention. He can be somber or quick-witted—often within the same poem: The mournful refrain of "Cuthbert and the Otters" is "I cannot thole the thought of Seamus Heaney dead," but that doesn't stop Muldoon from quipping that the ancient Danes "are already dyeing everything beige / In anticipation, perhaps, of the carpet and mustard factories." If this masterful, multifarious collection does have a theme, it is watchfulness. "War is to wealth as performance is to appraisal," he warns in "Recalculating." And "Source is to leak as Ireland is to debt." Heedful, hard-won, head-turning, heartfelt, these poems attempt to bring scrutiny to bear on everything, including scrutiny itself. One Thousand Things Worth Knowing confirms Nick Laird's assessment, in The New York Review of Books, that Muldoon is "the most formally ambitious and technically innovative of modern poets," an experimenter and craftsman who "writes poems like no one else."

In the late 1970's and the early 1980's, we (Judy, Jen, Josh, and I) were enamored with the words of A.A. Milne, especially the collection of nursery rhymes entitled "Now We Are Six." On many a night, these were the last words Jen and Josh heard as they fell to sleep and into dreams. I was also struck by the fact that Milne was a veteran of both world wars. Somehow he was able to pull himself away from the first world war to immerse himself into a child's world. And write his whimsical poems. He is the inspiration for these poems you'll find in this collection. When Judy and I moved up to central Maine, we were looking for educational alternatives for Jen and Josh. We were very fortunate to find Carol Scribner's Village School. Carol was superintendent, principal, bus driver, and teacher for a school where the arts were as important as math and science. There were maybe a dozen students enrolled at one time pursuing Carol's elementary school and middle school curricula. Everyone, including the parents, flourished under Carol's watchful eye. When Jen and Josh moved into the public schools, I wrote this poem for Carol: TO CAROL: MY CHILDREN'S TEACHER AND THE MOON COULD BE A WISE FISHERWOMAN HAULING HER JEWELED NET THROUGH OUR SEAS AND YOU TOO COULD BE OF THE MOON HAVING PULLED YOUR TENDER WEB THROUGH MY SON AND DAUGHTER THESE PAST FIVE YEARS AND AS THE SEA FOLLOWING THE MOON FORMS THE SHORE SO HAVE YOU COME THROUGH THEM TO SHAPE ME Now decades later we are moving in and out of the worlds of our granddaughters, Xochitl and Iona. Their drawings and paintings adorn the pages of this collection, as they, while reading these poems, weave their way through the earlier lives of their mother and uncle. From one generation to the next the wonderful world of poetry builds bridges to carry us all through the years ahead. In that spirit, we have left the last baker's dozen of pages open for you, dear reader, to write in your own poems or to sketch in your own dreams. Enjoy! And then pass them on.......

A BAKER'S DOZEN is a collection of 156 poems that satirize the structures of the world. Calling into question the different templates we see in the world in the pattern of 12, or a dozen, by adding in one extra for good measure, "a baker's dozen," the reader is able to learn how they can participate in society by finding their own unique niche. The title refers to the specific structure of the poetry sections within: that there are 13 groups of 12 poems each. A total of 156. These groups can be viewed as themes, such as months, horoscopes, colours, numbers, and so on. Within each of these 13 groups, there are 12 poems written, such as January, February, March; or, black, grey, white. By utilizing both 13 and 12 as forms of structure, one can see the difference between a rigid structure and how to participate in it fluidly (12 + 1 = 13). The title also is a clever play on the fact that I am a baker who also loves poetry. I feel like so many things in life are an art form that we can just pour ourselves into-and I would say two of my favourite art forms are food and writing! They come together nicely in this symbology of life. Food is probably one of the most important parts of our day. We engage with it multiple times, in different ways, and often celebrate it by taking meals with others. Writing is similar, in that although it is often done alone, reading is the connecting action between author and audience that makes it a communal activity as well. Upon this recognition, we can use this fun rendition of structure to peel back the layers of conditioning and open ourselves to a more free form of living and understanding of life. Some of the poems are free-form, while others follow certain poetic structures such as haiku, to also fit in with the overarching symbology of the text.
